The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, a nationally recognized and award-winning parks department, is seeking a RecreationOutreachInternwith our Southern Recreation and Leisure Services Division.

Position Overview
The Recreation Operations Intern will assist the Southern Recreation and Leisure Services Division staff with day-to-day operations, summer program coordination, and community engagement initiatives. This internship provides hands-on experience in public service, recreation programming, and facility operations while supporting the intern’s academic and professional development.

Schedule & Supervision
  • Work Schedule:Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (flexible schedule may be available by agreement)

  • Support park and recreation program staff with daily operational tasks
  • Attend staff meetings and document meeting notes or minutes as needed
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and executing recreational activities and public events
  • Maintain accurate records related to program participation, feedback, and safety observations
  • Collaborate with the supervisor to complete a capstone project aligned with Parks & Recreation goals
Capstone Project
The intern will complete a capstone project agreed upon with their supervisor. Potential project areas include:
  • Designing a new youth outreach or engagement program
  • Conducting an accessibility audit of local park and recreation facilities
  • Developing a marketing or outreach plan for an upcoming recreational event
  • Analyzing attendance and participation data to support program improvement
Learning Objectives
Through this internship, the individual will:
  • Gain real-world experience in public service and community programming
  • Develop professional, organizational, and communication skills
  • Learn about recreation facility operations and public engagement strategies
  • Apply academic knowledge in a practical, professional setting


Qualifications (Preferred)
  • Current enrollment in a program related to Parks & Recreation, Public Administration, Community Health, or a related field
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Interest in community engagement and public service
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
