The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a national leader in natural and historic preservation, managing museums, historic sites, and programs that commemorate and celebrate the region’s rich history.

Within the Department, the Natural and Historic Resources Division provides the public, especially Prince George’s County residents, with exceptional natural and historic resource management services and experiences—parks and cultural sites, nature centers and museums, county-wide programs, special events, and outdoor recreational destinations—to engage and educate our community and encourage stewardship of the diverse heritage of Prince George’s County.

Internship Focus

The Paleontology Intern will support the Division’s mission by assisting with fossil collections care, research support, and public education initiatives. This position offers hands-on experience in both collections management and informal science education.

The Paleontology Intern will assist with the full scope of paleontology collections and education work, including:

  • Field collection of fossil specimens
  • Fossil preparation and stabilization
  • Cataloging and digitization of fossil collections
  • Assisting with collections management activities at the Natural and Historic Resources collections facility in Upper Marlboro, MD
  • Supporting the development and delivery of paleontology-themed educational programs at Dinosaur Park in Laurel, MD, and potentially other Department sites

Course Background / Skills Needed

  • Previous experience with paleontology collections and/or educational programming is preferred but not required
  • Applicants are not required to have experience in the full scope of duties
  • Preference may be given to applicants pursuing careers in paleontology, museum work, or public education

Additional Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail and patience, particularly for fossil curation
  • Strong verbal communication skills for public-facing education programs
  • Comfort working with the public and diverse audiences
  • Basic computer skills, familiarity with museum or scientific databases is preferred, or willingness to learn
