The City of Superior is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Laborers to work at one of our many locations, including the Environmental Services Division, Street Division, Maintenance & Construction, or Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department.At the end of the application you will be asked which location(s) you would like to apply to.

HOURS:40 hours/week. Schedules vary based on season and location, see below. Season typically runs from April-November based on assignment, weather, and budget.Students only available in summer months are also encouraged to apply!

HOURLY WAGE:$19.12 - $21.51 (The$21.51 rate will be offered to those who possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License and perform work at that level.)

DEFINITION: Under supervision, performs a variety of tasks in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of City facilities. The Seasonal Laborer works on tasks that do not require operation of light or medium equipment. However, employees that possess a class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) are eligible to earn the higher rate if/when they operate light or medium equipment. Employees in seasonal laborer assignments are temporary employees and are not assigned to a shift; their work day/week may vary based on operational needs of their designated department.


TYPICAL TASKS BY DEPARTMENT:

Environmental Services Division - Collections:

Reports to Wastewater Treatment Plant - 51 E. 1st St. Superior, WI

Monday – Friday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm; 40 hours/week


  • Maintains and cleans facility and equipment.
  • Assists Engineering Technicians as required.
  • Assists in steaming of culverts and drains.
  • Assists in the operation of jetting and vactoring equipment.
  • Transports equipment, construction supplies and demolition materials.
  • Assists construction crews in the repair and rehabilitation of catch basins and manholes.
  • Assists construction crews in repairing cave-ins.
  • Operates jackhammer.
  • Completes daily logs, work orders and related records.
  • Assists with confined entry operations. Must have ability to enter confined spaces after proper training.

Street Division:

Reports to City Garage - 2301 Hill Ave. Superior, WI
Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm; 40 hours/week OR (Sign Shop) Monday - Thursday 5:00 am - 3:00 pm; 40 hours/week

  • Assists in blacktop, patching and paving.
  • Sets up necessary traffic control measures while working in the R.O.W.
  • Assists in erecting of street signs.
  • Fuels & Inspects equipment.
  • Assists in painting operations.
  • Constructs and maintains fences.
  • Erects and Maintains erosion control devices.
  • Assists in demolition activities.
  • Catalogs sign inventory.
  • Drives a tandem axle dump truck when required; if license allows.
  • Operates a wide range of hand power tools when necessary.
  • Maintains and cleans, grounds, facilities and equipment.
  • Assists in the dispersal and repair of garbage receptacles.
  • Works in adverse weather when required.

Maintenance & Construction:
Reports to City Garage - 2301 Hill Ave. Superior, WI
Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 3:00 pm (summer hours); 40 hours/week

  • Assists the Maintenance and Construction crew with remodeling, repairing, and overall maintenance of City owned properties.
  • May perform the following manual labor tasks at a basic skill level: painting, plumbing, welding, fabrication, etc.
  • Operates a wide range of hand power tools when necessary.
  • Must possess basic math skills for measuring and cutting.
  • Occasionally works at heights, and occasionally group lifts up to 100 lbs.
  • Performs all tasks according to industry safety standards.
  • Adapts and pivots based on project or daily needs of the department.

Parks, Recreation, & Forestry:
Reports to City Garage - 2301 Hill Ave. Superior, WI
Monday - Thursday 7:00 am – 5:00 pm (summer hours); 40 hours/week

  • Plant, weed, water, mulch and general maintenance for garden beds in parks and along vegetated corridors of Belknap Street and Tower Avenue.
  • Turf maintenance, including mowing, line trimming, edging, seeding, mulching, aerating, and raking. Mowing includes parks, vacant lots, roadsides, landfill and trails
  • Trail construction and maintenance. Brook paths and sidewalks using a tractor with a broom attachment.
  • Fall leaf and spring brush cleanup operations.
  • Empty garbage and recycling receptacles, and fill Mutt Mitt dispensers. Collect and dispose litter and windblown material.
  • Ballfield maintenance including placing and leveling aglime, dragging infields, placing and removing bases, mowing outfields, chalking baselines, and fence line trimming.
  • Maintain facilities including cleaning buildings and bathrooms. Remove/cover graffiti and perform other painting tasks as needed
  • Operate fuel, clean, grease, maintain, inspect a variety of equipment, as required per project. Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools
  • Transport equipment, construction supplies, and materials.
  • Special projects and other tasks to support Park operations and programs.
Knowledge:
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and the safety precautions for performing laborer tasks.
  • Some knowledge of general maintenance, construction, tools and equipment.
Ability to:
  • Use and care for tools and equipment used in the general maintenance, construction and repair work.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
  • Work under adverse weather conditions.
  • Safety lift 60 pounds from ground level to overhead level.
  • Perform the physical requirements of the position.
Any combination of training and experience which meets the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify for this position would be through high school graduation or GED certification and six months of experience performing laboring tasks.

Age Requirement:Must be at least 18 at the time of application.

Driver License: Must possess a valid Driver's License.
Drug Test:Must pass post-offer drug screen. Employee's that possess a CDL will be subject to random testing.
