Wage Scale: $20.05 - $26.96 per hour DOE

Position Summary:

This is a part-time (20 hours per week), hourly position responsible for duties as assigned and responding to intra- and interstate wildland fire incidents as part of the Syracuse Fire Department Wildfire Resource Team. Wildfire deployments usually involve a 16-hour workday, with up to 14 consecutive days out of area, working closely with other firefighting personnel to achieve common goals and objectives set by fire officers. Occasionally, wildfire deployments may extend to 21 days.

No experience is necessary. Successful applicants will be trained and certified before being deployed to wildfire incidents.

  • Skilled in: Operation of the applicable tools and equipment; Working under stress and using good judgment during emergencies.
  • Ability to: Present various options and approaches to problem identification and resolution; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; analyze situations and adopt a reasonable course of action; Work irregular shift hours.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and smell. The employee will also occasionally need to perform a variety of physically demanding maneuvers and activities during firefighting operations, including running, walking, stooping, bending, rolling, crawling, climbing, jumping, lifting, carrying, dragging, and safely operating assigned equipment and vehicles. The employee must successfully pass a medical exam after receiving a job offer. The employee must also pass the NWCG arduous pack test, which involves a 3-mile hike with a 45-pound pack over level terrain in under 45 minutes. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this role include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

The noise level is usually quiet in office settings and loud at emergency scenes. Work is performed mainly in vehicles and outdoor locations. Work often occurs in emergency and stressful situations. Individuals are exposed to hazards associated with fighting fires, including but not limited to smoke, noxious odors, fumes, solvents, and oils.

Work can be performed under a variety of unfavorable conditions, including harsh weather, poor or no lighting, extreme temperatures, and other adverse conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Proficiency in report writing
  • Able to work under stressful conditions
  • Ability to exhibit a high level of professionalism and integrity.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • First Aid / CPR or EMT
  • Wildland (NWCG) Firefighter II Certification (Red Card) or in the process of obtaining certification or able to renew certification within 30 days
