GEO Prep Academy of Baton Rouge (Sherwood campus) is a tuition-free, public charter school that serves students in grades 3-8. Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to providing an outstanding education for students each day as they transition from elementary to middle school to high school and COLLEGE. Our curriculum and teaching methods are designed using Core Knowledge in K-8 and a blended learning model in elementary school through high school. We are a TAP school!


REPORTS TO/TERM:

Principal and Administrative Team

This is a 10-month position.


ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

A School Nurse is required to perform the following duties:

  • First Aid: provide care, ordering supplies
  • Medications: Obtain required paperwork to administer medications, teaching parents, student, and staff about medication administration and monitoring progress.
  • Special Education IEPs and 504 plans: Conduct health assessments, vision and hearing, determining if the child's health affects their ability to learn, determining if the child qualifies for the Other Health Impaired category, health teaching to teachers in regards to the disability, etc.
  • Write emergency care plans for the students with certain health issues and educate the teachers and staff regarding these students using PowerSchool.
  • Obtain medical documentation regarding allergies, particularly food allergies and make everyone including cafeteria staff aware of this.
  • Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures: Assess the need, train staff, obtain MD orders, facilitating the least restrictive environment, etc. Write the Individualized Health Care Plan for each student's need.
  • Verify compliance with state immunization requirements and report the list to the Department of Health and Hospitals.
  • Case Management: Work with students and families to provide the best education for the student, such as looking at health needs and problem-solving issues. This area includes mental health care and requires basics health care counseling.
  • School infection control and CD management and reporting
  • Health education on a macro level to the school or district- Beginning of school year in-service for all staff concerning Allergy Awareness and Blood Borne pathogen control.

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher with at least 24 credit hours in content area
  • Current certification as an LPN or RN
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting school health services
  • Applicable experience, preferable in a school environment
