POSITION OVERVIEW:


The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the comprehensive Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHS&S) program at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, SC. This senior leadership role ensures that all QGS construction, maintenance, and operations activities are performed in full compliance with the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS), DOE Orders, OSHA regulations, and QGS EHS&S requirements. The Safety Manager serves as the primary safety liaison with DOE client personnel, regulatory agencies, and project leadership, and is accountable for advancing safety culture, driving performance, and supporting continuous improvement across the site. The ideal candidate will bring 10+ years of safety management experience in a nuclear, DOE, or similarly regulated industrial or government contracting environment.


What You’ll Do:

  • Lead and manage the site EHS&S program in compliance with DOE ISMS, DOE O 440.1, OSHA 29 CFR 1910/1926, and QGS EHS&S requirements, ensuring all work activities are planned and executed with safety as the top priority.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of safety professionals, industrial hygienists, and environmental specialists; provide day-to-day leadership, performance management, training, and professional development across all shifts.
  • Serve as the primary EHS&S point of contact with DOE client safety representatives, NNSA/DOE-SR oversight personnel, and regulatory agencies; lead safety briefings, incident reviews, and corrective action presentations.
  • Oversee incident reporting and investigation activities; direct root cause analyses for recordable incidents, near misses, and high-potential events, and ensure corrective actions are developed, tracked, and closed out.
  • Direct the planning and execution of safety inspections, audits, and program assessments; ensure findings are documented, monitored, and resolved in accordance with QGS and DOE requirements.
  • Review and approve job hazard analyses (JHAs), activity hazard analyses (AHAs), and safety portions of work packages for high-hazard activities; verify that controls are sufficient and effectively implemented.
  • Develop and deliver safety training, toolbox talks, and leadership coaching for project management, field supervision, and craft personnel; promote a strong, proactive safety culture across the site.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of QGS EHS&S, project, and program objectives.


What You’ll Bring:


Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive safety management experience in a DOE nuclear facility, heavy industrial, or government construction/maintenance environment, including at least 4 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOE ISMS, DOE O 440.1, OSHA 29 CFR 1910/1926, and federal contractor safety and health requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing incident investigations, corrective action programs, safety audit and surveillance programs, and multi-shift safety teams.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to effectively interface with DOE clients and regulatory personnel.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • Direct safety management experience at Savannah River Site or another DOE major facility, such as Hanford, WIPP, INL, Y-12, Oak Ridge, or similar.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).


LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:


Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Savannah River Site access badge and successfully complete all required DOE background checks and personnel security requirements.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry or Construction certification.


Preferred Licenses/Certifications

  • DOE Q or L Security Clearance.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) through BCSP.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Associate Industrial Hygienist (AIH).


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly supervises 4 to 10 safety professionals, industrial hygienists, and environmental specialists across all shifts, including responsibility for hiring, performance evaluations, corrective actions, and professional development.
