In the role of RN Sepsis Program Manager, you will be the expert and go to for all things sepsis related. You will lead the charge on the sepsis bundle, develop protocols and process improvement. This role will work closely with all units, physicians and will be responsible for delivering education to teams within the hospital. This is a full time salaried position working Monday - Friday, with the need for flexibility to attend morning and possible evening meeting and conversations with providers.

The ideal candidate has at least 3 years critical care experience or more and experience with sepsis patience.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position promotes the provision of optimal clinical care of patients through direct leadership, bedside coordination, and clinical excellence in sepsis management, while maintaining strong quality improvement and data analytics partnerships. This RN role is responsible for leading the clinical sepsis response team, providing expert consultation at the bedside, and ensuring evidence-based sepsis care delivery across the continuum. Enhances patient outcomes through direct clinical involvement, comprehensive quality oversight, data-driven process improvement, and staff mentorship using a multidisciplinary team approach. Ensures compliance with clinical standards and best practices for sepsis management including CMS SEP-1 criteria.

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Develops and maintains a comprehensive, effective clinical sepsis program which meets current clinical standards of care. Serves as the clinical leader of the sepsis response, actively participating in sepsis alert activations, providing bedside clinical expertise, and promoting evidence-based treatment protocols to effectively manage patient care through the continuum.

2. Provides direct clinical consultation and bedside assessment for patients with suspected or confirmed sepsis. Conducts daily clinical rounds on sepsis patients, collaborates with bedside nurses and physicians on treatment plans, and serves as a clinical resource for complex sepsis cases. Ensures timely recognition and appropriate clinical interventions.

3. Oversees patient and practice quality improvements in partnership with Quality Department. Partners with data analysts to track, report, and submit hospital sepsis data. Completes real-time and retrospective chart review to ensure optimal sepsis care and documentation. Monitors compliance with established treatment protocols and analyzes clinical data to identify trends and drive improvements.

4. Reviews clinical care patterns for consistency with established sepsis protocols and evidence-based guidelines. Research and recommend changes with a primary focus on patient outcomes including reduction in mortality rates, length of stay, and sepsis-related readmissions. Identifies clinical practice gaps and provides recommendations for improvement.

5. Collaborates with providers and clinical staff across ED, ICU, pharmacy, laboratory, Quality Department, and other clinical departments to facilitate seamless patient care transitions and close multidisciplinary partnerships. Leads multidisciplinary sepsis team rounds, case reviews, and team activities including meeting agendas, scheduling, maintaining minutes, and follow-up on assigned tasks.

6. Collaborates and participates in development and refinement of evidence-based sepsis clinical protocols and order sets for the enterprise. Partner with CMO and medical staff to promote provider adoption and clinical adherence. Assesses clinical staff training needs and implements comprehensive sepsis education programs in collaboration with the clinical education team to promote clinical competence and confidence. Partners with the team to develop and deliver evidence-based sepsis education for healthcare providers including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other specialists across the continuum of care. Provides bedside mentoring and clinical coaching.

7. Participates in preparation for site surveys and maintenance of evidence-based sepsis care standards. Ensure clinical compliance through staff education, bedside support, and quality monitoring. Develops and coordinates community education programs focused on sepsis awareness, early recognition, and prevention.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent experience.

Must possess a current, valid RN license in the state of practice, temporary RN license in state of practice, or compact RN licensure for current state of practice. BLS certification is required. ACLS certification required within 90 days of hire.

Requires a proficiency level typically achieved with 3 to 5 years of clinical experience in area of specialty, preferably in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Emergency Department setting. Requires excellent clinical leadership skills and an ability to interact well across departments, facilities, and organizations. Excellent clinical program management skills to effectively provide broad clinical oversight, bedside consultation, and quality partnership while maintaining the success of sepsis program.

Strong knowledge of sepsis pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and current sepsis guidelines. Solid grasp of hemodynamics and critical care principles required.

Computer skills including basic office software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations), ability to navigate electronic medical records, and ability to analyze clinical data, identify trends, and interpret results.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred.

Prior clinical leadership, charge nurse, supervisory, or program coordination experience preferred.

CCRN, CEN, CPHQ, Lean Six Sigma, or sepsis-related certification preferred.

Experience with clinical quality improvement initiatives and methodologies preferred.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
