Description:

The Manager of Hospital & Cancer Center Pharmacy Services is responsible for ensuring the provision of comprehensive pharmacy services to all patients and customers in areas of responsibility. This position provides leadership for department services through collaboration with employees, other departments/services, and customers. This position also provides guidance and oversight to the medication use processes (as defined by the Joint Commission as well as other State and Federal regulations) across the continuum of care to ensure these processes are organized, systematic, and monitored on an ongoing basis.

  • Provides effective leadership and direction to areas of responsibility (e.g. hospital pharmacy, cancer center pharmacy, etc).
  • Provides oversight of / guidance to others regarding medication use processes
  • Oversees provision of pharmacy services in areas of responsibility, including operational, cognitive, educational and administrative functions.
  • Coordinates collection / monitoring of clinical and process data related to quality, outcomes, operations, and cost of providing pharmacy services.
  • Develops an operations/clinical plan (including scope of service) integrated with MercyOne’s strategic plan and related departments operational plans in order to efficiently and safely provide services.
  • Develops, implements and periodically reviews department/organization policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services complying with MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center policies, Joint Commission and USP standards, and federal and state regulations. Maintains current knowledge base of trends, policies, regulatory standards, and legislation and advises administration when pertinent.
  • Develops and maintains departmental staffing plan detailing appropriate associate classifications and qualifications consistent with the department’s operational plan, projected volumes, and other relevant indicators. Regularly conducts human resources planning process providing recommendations for proactive staffing, recruitment and long-term needs. Assures daily staffing adheres to plan.
  • Continuously assesses and improves the department’s performance based on, but not limited to the department’s quality plan monitors, process improvement initiatives, patient/associate satisfaction data and associate safety and injury prevention.
  • Interviews and selects qualified staff and assures associates are appropriately oriented. Continually develops staff thorough competency assessments, in-services and continuing education, and performance appraisal process.
  • Effectively plan, monitor and manage the financial resources of the Department/Organization. K. Identify, plan, and submit capital requests.
  • Monitors and analyzes ongoing performance and productivity and implements necessary corrective plans.
  • Ensures 340b compliance for medication purchases according to 340b policies and procedures.
  • Maintains effective inter-departmental communication and cooperation.
  • Provides leadership to information systems / automated technology in areas of responsibility.
  • Uses a team approach when working with staff and others. Ensures team members are oriented, trained / mentored, and are competent to perform their jobs and function in their areas of responsibility.
  • Places an emphasis on team engagement and development in areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures the coordination of the MercyOne North Iowa Formulary.
  • Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.
  • Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
  • Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth/development, and; participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.
  • Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors.
  • upports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
  • Performs other responsibilities as requested by director.

Education

1. Completion of a B.S. or Pharm.D. in pharmacy required. ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Residency training is preferred.

2. A graduate degree in Management, business, or health care administration is desired.

3. Iowa Pharmacist licensure, either by examination or by reciprocity, within 90 days of employment is required.

Experience:

1. Previous leadership, management or supervisory experience (2-3 years minimum) in a diverse pharmacy or complex health care organization.
