Research Technician, Biochemistry, Brown

Vanderbilt University
Nashville, TN

About the Work Unit:

The Brown Laboratory focuses on understanding defects in macromolecular protein assembly that underlie human disease. Specifically, using X-ray crystallography and related techniques, we seek to solve the 3-D structures of the individual protein components of large assemblies known to be critical for proper mitochondrial physiology; defects in which cause severe diseases ranging from anemia to neurodegeneration. Ultimately, we can use this detailed molecular information to uncover how genetic mutations cause changes in protein folding, leading to aberrant assembly and subsequent human disease. In addition to X-ray crystallography, the laboratory also employs a wide range of biochemical and biophysical techniques to complement our structural work, including mass spectrometry, fluorescence-based enzyme assays, analytical ultracentrifugation, and various binding assays, to name few. Members of the laboratory will be based in the recently-renovated space and will work in a collaborative and interactive community space shared by other biochemistry laboratories.
