KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • The Devineni Lab is seeking a Research Specialist to perform studies in fruit flies (Drosophila) investigating how neural circuits in the brain process information.
  • Experiments may include dissections and immunostaining of fly brains, behavioral assays, optogenetic manipulations, and in vivo imaging of neural activity.
  • Depending on the person’s interests and skills, they may also assist in buildingexperimental hardware or writing software. Other responsibilities will include general lab tasks such as maintaining fly stocks.
  • The Research Specialist will work closely with the principal investigator, and contributions to experiments will merit authorship on resulting publications.
  • Applicants should have previous research experience and background in a STEM field such as biology or neuroscience.
  • Experience working with Drosophila, using neuroscience techniques, and/or programming will be judged favorably.
  • Candidates should have good organizational and problem-solving skills, the ability to multitask, and attention to detail.
  • A one- to two-year commitment is expected.
