A Brief Overview
Performs phlebotomy and sample processing tasks under a manager's supervision. The Research Phlebotomist I must exhibit the ability to work independently in all inpatient units (if applicable) and outpatient/ambulatory settings, demonstrating the nuanced knowledge required to successfully serve patients and research participants in these settings.

The Research Phlebotomist I will be responsible for collection, processing, and storage of samples and associated data to support the daily operations of a large sample biorepository within the Leukodystrophy Center, a cutting-edge translational program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Researchers in the Leukodystrophy Center are currently focused on uncovering novel genetic etiologies within this group of disorders, identifying key biomarkers, and developing a repository of samples and corresponding data to support development of cutting-edge therapies.

The Research Phlebotomist will work under direct supervision of the Clinical Research Administrative Director and will interact daily with a large multidisciplinary research group that includes Principal Investigators, CoInvestigators, Clinical Research Coordinators, and Research Technicians. Routine responsibilities may include receiving research samples obtained from outpatient clinic or inpatient unit, sample accessioning and processing (inc. DNA/RNA extraction, PBMC purification, etc.), maintaining one or more online sample databases, coordinating incoming/outgoing sample shipments with external collaborators, etc. The Research Phlebotomist may occasionally be asked to assist with downstream experimental work lead by more senior scientific staff in the Leukodystrophy center.

The Leukodystrophy Center's research program is high-volume and fast-paced, and a successful candidate must be able to demonstrate an ability to multi-task with little to no errors. Prior experience in a laboratory setting is preferred. Outstanding written and oral communication skills are essential, as the position involves regular contact with collaborators within and externally to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The Leukodystrophy Center is a founding member of the Global Leukodystrophy Initiative Clinical Trials Network (GLIA-CTN), a Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN) consortium funded under grant number U54NS115052 as a collaboration between the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

What you will do

• 1. Collect and Maintain Research Samples and Data as Required for Specific Clinical Research Protocols (90%)
• • Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy following established procedures, including:
• • 1. Identifying patient or research participant correctly 100% of time.
• • 2. Rendering age-appropriate care.
• • 3. Following all safety and infection control rules.
• • Collect research samples from outpatient and/or inpatient areas of the hospital.
• • Enters or releases all applicable information orders in the appropriate computer system, verifying that all tests are ordered accurately and completely using established procedures. Makes inquiries when needed.
• • Perform basic sample processing (inc. DNA/RNA extraction, PBMC purification, etc.) in a laboratory setting using established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• • Complete electronic and physical log sheets accurately and in a timely manner as required for the protocol.
• • Ensures that all orders are accounted for before finishing patient.
• • Must understand and demonstrate competency of the computer hardware and software unique to each area.
• • Must understand and be capable of implementing the downtime procedure in both inpatient (if applicable) and outpatient/ambulatory settings.
• • Must understand and demonstrate competency of laboratory equipment and maintenance procedures (such as centrifuge, printers, etc).
• • Uses problem-solving to address any and all problems that arise and follow through with appropriate action. Responds to work demands with very little or no errors and is able to perform the essential duties assigned independently.
• • Interacts professionally and cordially with coworkers and colleagues. • Follows all inventory control policies and keeps the laboratory clean, well-stocked, and generally in good appearance.
• • Assists in receiving and rotating supplies, taking ownership of resolving all discrepancies. Performs other duties as assigned or requested
• • Coordinating incoming/outgoing sample shipments with external collaborators.
• • Communicate difficulties or problems in collecting research samples and/or data as prescribed. Collaborate with Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, Study Staff to troubleshoot and optimize processes.
• • 2. Assist with Quality Improvement Activities as Related to Research Protocols (5%)
• • Communicate difficulties or problems in collecting research samples and/or data as prescribed. Collaborate with Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, Study Staff to troubleshoot and optimize processes.
• • Work with Laboratory Director to ensure that sample collection and processing supplies are restocked in a timely fashion.
• • 3. Further own Professional Development (5%)
• • Participate in the preparation and presentation of research projects within the Department.
• • Attend relevant meetings and research conferences.
• • Develop professional development plan with manager and participate in appropriate coursework/training activities.

Education Qualifications

• High School Diploma / GED - Required
• Technical Diploma Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant Training Program - Preferred

Experience Qualifications

• At least one (1) year phlebotomy experience - Preferred
• Pediatric phlebotomy experience - Preferred
• At least one (1) year of research experience - Preferred

Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations

• Certified Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) - ASCP The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) upon hire Preferred
• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) upon hire Preferred
