TheDepartment of Emergency Medicineat the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is seekinga Research Medical Scribe to joinour collaborative team ofClinicalResearchCoordinators (CRCs).

UVA Medical Centeris aLevel I Trauma Center, and the UVA Emergency Department(ED)cares forover75,000 patientsper year. The EDspans45,000 square feet,includes80 private patientrooms,andfeaturesdedicatedtreatment areas for pediatrics, trauma/resuscitation, and behavioral health.Servicesincludeadult and pediatric services, activeairand ground transport programs, and is supported by an on-sitepoison control center.

The Department ofEmergency Medicine’s Medical Scribe Programbeganin 2007,providingsupport to Emergency Medicine physicians and staff as well as other departments within UVA.Medical scribes provide clinicalassistanceto faculty by performing on-site medical transcription and administrative support.TheResearch Medical Scribeplaysa critical role in both clinical documentation and clinical research operations, working closely with physicians,study investigators, clinical research coordinators, and patients.

This position is ideal for individuals interested in pursuing careers in medicine, clinical research, or related healthcare fields and whodesireimmersive, hands-on experience in a high-acuity academic medical center.Researchscribes work directly with patients to obtaininformed consent,research data, and/or biological specimensand performother study proceduresas required by protocols. Responsibilities may include:

Medical Scribe

  • Accompany physicians on patient encounters tosupportaccurateand completemedicaldocumentation,including notes of communication, past medical records,and laboratory and diagnosticresults
  • Perform real-time data entry into electronic medical record systemsin accordance withUniversity and Medical Center policies

Research Scribe

  • Perform data entry into various research databasesand electronic platforms
  • Ensure thetimelycollection of researchparticipant data,assistinmaintainingappropriatestudylogs
  • Assistfaculty and researchers withthecreation ofstudyreports/forms,literature reviews, and disposition of informationto clinicalcareteams (physicians, nurses, techs, and scribes).
  • Recruit, screen, and enroll study participantsinto research studies

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Work hours, clinical vs. research effort, and scheduling will bedeterminedbased on departmental needs and discussed during the interview process.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalentisrequired.

Experience:Experience in a healthcare, research, or clinical setting, including real-time scribing or medical documentation, is preferred.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Salary will becommensuratewith education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
