Broadcast Media-Montana Public Radio (MTPR)invites applications for a Reporterto assist in sharing news as a local host and newscast producer during All Things Considered. The position works under the daily supervision of the MTPR News Director with moderate independence following assigned methods, priorities, and timelines for completing news for broadcast. You will be responsible for three main duties: hosting, digital content, and reporting.

  • Follow FCC rules governing broadcast program content (radio only)
  • Operate complicated mixing board and/or control panel in proscribed sequences
  • Load audio as necessary to air programming
  • Conduct news research using the internet, newspapers, and other sources
  • Produce and deliver newscasts and reports
  • Produce feature length stories using field recording kits and in-studio equipment and computers
  • Upload audio, video, and text content to website, podcasting platforms, and social media platforms as appropriate
  • Support and assist reporting and production by other news staff
  • Proof copy for grammar and style
  • Perform basic audio and image editing
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Comprehensive knowledge of journalism standards of balance, fairness, and fact checking
  • Comprehensive knowledge of recording, microphones, camera and other video equipment
  • Ability to read well with an authoritative and comforting voice
  • Comprehensive knowledge of language and pronunciation of names and words
  • Excellent communication, writing, interviewing and editing skills
  • Ability to perform under deadline, live-production pressure, and when breaking news interrupts the daily routine
  • Ability to edit audio and use web-based social media platforms
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Familiarity with web publishing or social media management
  • Familiarity with social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram
  • Familiarity with podcasting
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in journalism or related field with experience performing under live-production pressure
  • Two (2) years news and feature writing and reporting experience
  • Two (2) years on-air experience

Compensation Title: Media Programmer

Bargaining Unit:FOCUS-MFPE

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), 12 months/year (Shifts may be scheduled in early morning, late night, or weekends)

Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum
