Reporting to the East Region Executive Director (ED) of UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family Plan (IFP) business, the Regional VP of Sales (RVP) will hold responsibility for sales performance and membership growth of the IFP distribution channels in a multi-state regional territory.

This RVP of IFP sales will identify, develop and execute strategic initiatives designed to promote membership growth for the emerging IFP line of business. This role will own external relationships for the IFP sales distribution channel inclusive but not limited overseeing broker relationships, navigators and assistors, and external growth stakeholders. They will be working closely with the ED for distribution partner selection, segmentation, strategy, and commission planning. Building, developing and leading a high-performance sales team located within their regional territory is a key component of success in this role.

Working internally in a highly matrixed environment, this position will ensure alignment and execution of deliverables from key executives and cross functional work groups. Internal teams will include a cross function sales effort from M&R and E&I business units, while partnering with IFP Marketing, Product Development, Pricing, and Network Development to achieve membership targets over the geographic territory.

This Leader will develop tailored distribution strategies within their geographic market to win membership share while uniquely serving the communities and membership within their regional territories. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Sales and Member Retention

  • Owns sales strategy, tactics, and execution for IFP within the identified territory

  • Owns agent segmentation and selection, account management, training, and commission setting to achieve production goals

  • A relationship steward and influencer, fostering existing distribution partnerships from UHOne, M&R, and E&I while developing and accelerating new partnerships across all markets within the region

  • Leads a team of agency managers and support staff, from ramp up through the selling and reporting period

  • Sales reporting, activity management and performance management

  • Develop long term distribution strategies that will excel in the evolving individual marketplace

  • Development of Regional Market Strategy

  • Works with marketing to identify, segment, and recruit the correct distribution partners to achieve membership targets

  • Works closely with IFP Executive Director to grow membership and be the external IFP spokesperson

  • Identifies market opportunities and develops regional strategies and tactics and ensures their execution in the marketplace through direct team and matrixed teams (sales, marketing, product, pricing, and network)

  • Supports UnitedHealthcare national strategies and messages by tailoring initiatives to fit the local markets within the region

  • Matrix Management

  • Works closely with marketing to develop and execute go-to market strategy and value proposition

  • Influence over marketing and community outreach strategy for individual markets

  • Interfaces with Product team by supporting local product strategies, providing feedback from the market on product competitiveness

  • Interfaces with Network team by supporting local network strategies, providing feedback from the market on network competitiveness and key provider strategy

  • Establish and participate in operating team meetings to review performance against goals, and identify business opportunities for UHC

  • Leadership

  • Develops solid leadership team (direct or indirect) and marshal's resources (aligning people, funding, material, support) to achieve growth and retention of new and existing business

  • Prioritizes, sets goals, and ensures they are achieved on time and on budget

  • Orchestrates multiple activities at once to accomplish a goal; uses resources effectively and efficiently

  • Reviews and approves strategy, performance, and operational execution for all sales areas

  • Compliance / Regulatory Management & Government Affairs

  • Ability to represent business and local market. Can serve as face to market as needed or to support ED with stakeholders internally and externally

  • Make high level agent compliance decisions and corrective actions when needed

Demonstrated Skills:

  • Expert at strategic conceptualization both at a local level and within the framework of being a part of a national organization
  • Solid understanding of operations, reporting and forecasting; ability to quickly aggregate and analyze information, draw conclusions, set a path of action and mobilize the team effectively
  • Ability to assess program/initiative needs and create relevant plans; can simplify complex processes can see opportunities for synergy and integration; sets objectives and goals; detail-oriented and thorough
  • Solid project management skills; demonstrated history of managing significant and complex projects. Sets vision/strategy, tactical plans, and leads professionals to execute against those plans
  • Ability to effectively deal with moderate levels of ambiguity - can effectively cope with change, can shift gears comfortably, can decide and act without having the total picture, comfortably handles risk and uncertainty. Can navigate complex situations, conflicts, and issues effectively. Proven ability to take appropriate risk to advance our business, isn't just a play it safe person
  • Demonstrated leadership and hands-on experience, solid leader and motivator with the ability to mentor talent within the organization; able to provide work direction; able to attract and retain top talent
  • Solid communicator; capable of effectively presenting ideas and selling concepts and tactics; excellent writer, proven ability to communicate effectively with executive-levels; ability to quickly understand needs and act on those needs; ability to conceptualize and effectuate change management and "out-of-the-box" thinking. May have Marketing skills / background to understand how to communicate, position, and represent companies with external constituents.
  • Ability to establish trust of business partners and other members of leadership team; builds effective relationships both inside and outside the organization; uses diplomacy and tact. Can mobilize these relationships, especially cross-functionally, leading toward common goals
  • Self-starter who acts independently and directs own work

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree or equivalent years of experience
  • 10+ years health plan/insurance experience within a large complex organization including Commercial/Affordable Care Act (ACA), Medicaid and/or Medicare
  • 7+ years of sales experience in expanding leadership roles, including developing and leading high-performance teams (ideally in both direct and indirect capacities) and managing matrix relationships
  • 5+ years building strategic plans, effectively seeing them from ideation through development, execution, and refinement, ideally in complex and/or large ecosystems
  • A state life/health insurance license is a requirement for this position by law. If you do not already have one, must be willing to obtain a (company-sponsored) state health/life insurance license within 60 days of hire
  • Reside in/within a commutable distance to Northeast regional markets: Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland or Virginia
  • Able to travel up to 50% of time (including road/air) within this Northeast U.S. market area

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current life/health insurance sales license
  • ACA leadership experience
  • Small group sales experience

Connecticut or New York Residents Only: The salary range for Connecticut or New York residents is $130,000 to $220,000. Role is also eligible to receive bonuses based on sales performance. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
