Recreation Coordinator - Aquatics and Fitness

Under the general direction of the Assistant Park and Recreation Director and Recreation Program Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator – Aquatics and Fitness is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating aquatic and fitness programs, special events, and daily Recreation Center operations. This position ensures safe, high-quality programming and positive customer experiences while supervising staff and supporting overall facility operations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  • Lead, train, schedule, supervise, and assist with recruiting aquatic and recreation staff.
  • Plan and teach Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), CPR/AED, First Aid, and other health and safety certification courses.
  • Design, coordinate, implement, and conduct regular in-service training for fitness instructors, lifeguards, and water safety instructors.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, administer, promote, and evaluate aquatic and fitness programs, orientations, and special events.
  • Assist with daily Recreation Center operations, including member services and public relations activities.
  • Provide high-quality customer service to members, participants, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Schedule and promote recreation programs and fitness classes for all ages and ability levels.
  • Routinely inspect aquatic and fitness equipment to ensure safe operation; coordinate maintenance and assist with equipment purchasing as needed.
  • Teach fitness classes and swimming lessons as needed and provide on-site program oversight.
  • Monitor and enforce pool safety policies, procedures, and health code requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records including schedules, rosters, and certifications.
  • Works evenings and weekends as required.
  • Prepare and submit program budget recommendations and monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets.
  • Adhere to all City safety practices and procedures and attend required training.
  • Support the Recreation Program Supervisor with overall programming and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety codes related to aquatic facilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of CPR/AED, First Aid, and water safety standards.
  • Ability to maintain accurate program and membership records.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services, Sports Management, Physical Education, Exercise Science, or a related field is required.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience and one (1) year of prior teaching or instructional experience are required.
  • Five (5) years of directly related and progressively responsible experience may substitute for the education requirement.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license.
  • Current Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), and Group Fitness certifications are preferred, but must obtained within six (6) months of hire if not currently held.
  • Accredited Personal Trainer certification is desired, but not required.
