The City of Roanoke is seeking a Recreation Assistant – Facility Custodian to perform responsible work supporting the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of the Eureka Recreation Center. This position plays a key role in maintaining a welcoming and well-kept environment for patrons, programs, and facility rentals.

Responsibilities include routine cleaning of facility spaces such as gymnasiums, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, and common areas. Duties may involve sweeping, mopping, sanitizing surfaces, trash removal, and restocking supplies. The Facility Custodian will assist with setup and breakdown for programs, events, and rentals, ensuring spaces are prepared and maintained according to established standards. This position may also identify and report maintenance needs and safety concerns.

The position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with attention to detail and a strong commitment to cleanliness and customer service. Must be able to follow instructions, manage time effectively, and interact professionally with staff and the public. Basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment, and safety practices is preferred.

Minimum requirements include any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and some experience in custodial work, facility maintenance, or a related field. A valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred.

Hours will vary based on facility operations and rental schedules and will include evenings and weekends.

Requires knowledge of youth development and community activities including but not limited to: fitness and movement, art,nature study, crafts and be able to assist children with homework assignments. Must have the ability to develop new and creative programs, build and maximize neighborhood and community relations, and utilize effective communication (both orally and in writing). May have to collect registration documents, write receipts, make deposits and complete assignments on computer.Minimum requirements include any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and one year experience in a day-care or after-school setting. Certifications required upon request -ARC Standard First Aid and CPR.
