A Non-Merit vacancy exists in the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks for a Lake Roland Park Administrative Aide.

Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

Regular schedule: 34 hours per week. Plus, County benefits.

Under general supervision, performs comprehensive word processing, typing, and other clerical duties in support of an office at a high-traffic park site or nature center.

Essential Job Duties
  • Staff a front desk to greet visitors, answer questions, and provide orientation information.

  • Responds to inquiries of a routine nature regarding department programs and policies in person, by telephone, or by electronic mail.

  • Uses automated office systems, such as email, calendar/scheduling, Microsoft Desktop Publishing, and word processing computer software to prepare a variety of flyers, letters, memos, meeting schedules, and other material from draft or specific instructions.

  • Creates, duplicates, and distributes flyers, letters, memos, and other documents.

  • Establishes and maintains confidential alphabetical, chronological, or subject matter files and records.

  • Assists with registration of programs and/or special events.

  • Assists in the preparation of personnel-related documents and forms.

  • Operates office machinery, such as computers, photocopiers, calculators, telephones, scanners, and printers.

Examples of Other Duties

Creates and maintains office spreadsheets, databases, and logs to track data using CivicRec and Microsoft Excel.

Maintains calendars, schedules appointments and meetings, and reserves meeting room facilities or space using CivicRec and Microsoft Outlook.

Performs other related duties as required.

Possession of a high school diploma or its appropriate equivalent.

Experience

At least one (1) year of general clerical experience in a position that requires significant time spent creating and/or transcribing documents using word processing software and extensive telephone and in-person customer service interaction.

Additional education related to secretarial/word processing may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Preferred Experience

Experience performing administrative duties in a park or nature center setting.

  • Knowledge of modern office methods and procedures, including filing systems
  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, and arithmetic
  • Knowledge of creating flyers and other marketing materials using Microsoft Publisher desktop publishing
  • Knowledge of word processing
  • Skill in the operation of office machines as listed in the essential duties
  • Skill in the use of word processing software
  • Skill in responding to inquiries and handling routine complaints
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
  • Ability to set up and maintain paper and electronic filing systems

  • Ability to type from plain copy at a rate of 40WPM

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Qualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of the training and experience they submitted in their application and supplemental questionnaire. Positions may require working fixed shifts (Monday-Friday) or rotating shifts, which may include at least two weeknights and weekends or holidays, as needed.

The work of these positions is essentially sedentary, with occasional walking and/or lifting or other restricted physical activities.

Positions are located in recreation community offices in parks or nature centers on other campuses and may be in an isolated, secluded, and/or solitary work environment.
