Performs responsible work facilitating recreational activities for nursing home residents, specifically those on the Special Care Unit, in accordance with State and Federal regulations. Work involves developing and implementing an activity program appropriate to the needs and interests of each resident, emphasizing the leisure focus of these activities.
The position is located at the Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home at 70 Parsonage Road, Greenwich, CT 06830.Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school and completion of one college level course in Therapeutic Recreation or closely related field, plus 1 year of work experience providing recreational or therapeutic programs to the elderly, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of a variety of social, educational and recreational activities.
Ability to successfully engage special needs population in simple, short-term group activities and to focus or redirect these residents to the task at hand, and to operate equipment used in programs.
Ability to maintain effective, harmonious working relationships with residents, families of residents, employees and superiors.
Ability to be physically active in order to personally supervise ongoing programs, and to escort residents (either ambulatory or in wheelchairs) to various areas in the building or on outings.
Ability to move about on the units (including stairways to and from 4th floor) and throughout the facility where residents may be present.
Ability to operate equipment necessary to perform the functions of the position such as a television, VCR, slide/film projector, stereo equipment, rhythm instruments, telephone, photocopier and unit alarm systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Plans and directs weekday and weekend activities designed to provide interest, pleasure and in consideration of the background, needs, physical limitations, mental capacity, attention span and capabilities of each resident.
Maintains a daily record of resident participation and observations of resident behavior in activities.
Attends meetings and conferences, which are not State mandated.
Performs related clerical tasks, i.e. photo copying and faxing.
Performs related work as assigned.All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.
All outside candidates will be required to undertake and successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes a substance abuse test that includes testing for THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), given at the Town's expense prior to employment if conditionally offered a part time, full time or safety sensitive position.
