Position Overview
As a Category Analyst you are responsible for compiling research data, analyzing and interpreting the research information, and creating recommendations on achieving category development objectives. The Category Analyst also supports the development of a promotional marketing plan that will improve the performance of a category. Team Members in this position provide analytical and resource support to Category Managers. This job classification requires retail, inventory, and pricing knowledge with the proven ability to formulate marketing plans that support department objectives and goals.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Category Analysis & Performance
- Conduct research and analysis to optimize category sales and margin performance
- Forecast category sales targets and evaluate product placement, assortment, and promotional lift
- Analyze category performance using key indicators including sales, gross profit, margin, and market share
- Track consumer behavior, product trends, and competitive activity across markets served
- Produce weekly category metrics reports and ad hoc analysis as requested
Data & Reporting
- Gather data from internal databases, vendors, manufacturers, and external syndicated sources (e.g., AC Nielsen)
- Analyze sales data, customer retail scan data, and market performance metrics
- Write and execute queries to support analytical needs
Assortment, Pricing & Shelf Management
- Analyze item assortments and recommend efficient assortment strategies
- Evaluate pricing structures and monitor the impact of pricing strategies, competition, and market trends
- Develop recommendations for promotions, shelf placement, and space allocation
- Perform shelf management analysis to ensure equitable sales and space performance
- Conduct post‑event promotional performance analysis by item and category
Marketing & Category Planning Support
- Support development and evaluation of category marketing plans
- Prepare post‑implementation evaluations to measure success, compliance, and results
Vendor & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Establish and maintain effective business relationships with vendors, brokers, manufacturers, and trade groups
- Support alignment across internal stakeholders through clear, data‑driven insights
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum of 2+ years of analytical, retail sales, or merchandising experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of category management concepts, practices, and procedures
- Strong financial and analytical skills demonstrated through coursework or professional experience
- Understanding of sales, merchandising, promotion planning, and category performance analysis
- Knowledge of consumer research methodologies and techniques
- Understanding of competitor, brand, and supplier strategies
- Thorough understanding of the supply chain
- Experience utilizing sales data, retail scan data, and syndicated market data (AC Nielsen tools)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to take initiative and work effectively in a fast‑paced environment
- Ability to gain alignment across diverse stakeholder groups
