SHOLA is seeking a senior-level Radiology student who wants hands-on experience in a surgical hospital environment. This is not just a clinical rotation — it’s an opportunity to work alongside experienced technologists in the OR and procedural setting while preparing for your transition into a full-time Radiologic Technologist role.

As a Radiology Tech Extern, you’ll gain exposure to:

This position is designed to help you bridge the gap between student and licensed technologist — with the potential for full-time employment upon graduation and ARRT certification.


The Radiology Tech Extern is a senior-level radiography student currently enrolled in an accredited Radiologic Technology program and in good academic standing. Under the direct supervision of a licensed Radiologic Technologist, and in accordance with Louisiana state regulations, ARRT standards, and hospital policy, the Extern assists with radiographic and procedural imaging services supporting surgical, pain management, and diagnostic care within a specialty spine hospital environment.


The Extern may not perform radiologic procedures independently and must have a licensed technologist physically present and immediately available during all imaging activities. This role is designed to provide hands-on clinical experience and professional development to prepare the student for transition into a full-time Radiologic Technologist position upon graduation and ARRT certification.

Requirements

Education:

  • Senior-level student currently enrolled in an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
  • Must be in good academic standing

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year of experience in a hospital or medical environment is preferred.

Licenses/Certificates:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) required.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Willingness to learn and accept feedback.
  • Ability to function effectively in a clinical environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and critical-thinking skills.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (All duties are performed under direct supervision of a licensed Radiologic Technologist and in accordance with Louisiana state regulations, ARRT standards, and hospital policy.)

  • Verify patient readiness and review pertinent history prior to procedures.
  • Assist with patient preparation, positioning, and immobilization to ensure comfort, safety, and accurate imaging.
  • Assist with preparation of contrast media under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Assist in maintaining sterile technique during surgical and procedural cases as appropriate.
  • Maintain radiology supplies and ensure equipment is cleaned and disinfected per infection control standards.
  • Prepare imaging rooms and equipment to ensure readiness for scheduled cases.
  • Adhere to all federal and state radiation safety regulations, including shielding and collimation.
  • Operate radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment under the direct supervision of a licensed Radiologic Technologist and in accordance with Louisiana state regulations and hospital policy.
  • Provide patient-centered care consistent with hospital service standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
