Casual Pulmonary Wellness Instructor

Schedule: 1–2 days per week (Tuesday and Thursday)
Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

We are seeking a dedicated Pulmonary Wellness Instructor to join our team on a casual basis. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring a comprehensive pulmonary wellness program for both inpatients and outpatients. The position also includes program marketing and patient/family education, while ensuring the delivery of high-quality Pulmonary Wellness services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Development & Implementation:

    • Design and maintain a pulmonary wellness program in collaboration with physicians and lead therapists.

    • Develop treatment plans under physician direction and maintain necessary orders and protocols for clinical and financial success.

  • Patient Care & Education:

    • Orient and evaluate patients in partnership with physicians.

    • Provide systematic education addressing exercise, risk factor modification, diet, and counseling.

    • Encourage patient and family involvement in safety and wellness processes.

  • Safety & Compliance:

    • Commit to high-quality, safe practices and identify opportunities for improvement.

    • Report unsafe conditions promptly and participate in initiatives to reduce risk.

    • Maintain compliance with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Community Engagement & Documentation:

    • Develop and maintain community contacts to support program goals.

    • Ensure accurate documentation of statistics, policies, procedures, and financial records.

  • Professional Development:

    • Assume responsibility for ongoing education and maintain required state licensure.

    • Actively practice behaviors aligned with UPMC Susquehanna’s Service Excellence standards.

Qualifications

  • Current state licensure in a relevant discipline.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Education:

    • Graduate of an AMA-accredited Respiratory Therapy program.

    • Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy or Applied Science required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

    • Alternative pathways include:

      • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through registry

      • Registered Nurse (RN)

      • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

      • Exercise Physiologist with ACSM-EP or ASEP credential

  • Experience:

    • Two years of experience in pulmonary rehabilitation preferred.

    • Strong background in patient education and wellness program development is a plus.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Current licensure or certification in one of the following:

    • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

    • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)

    • Registered Nurse (RN)

    • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

    • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

    • ACSM Health Fitness Specialist Certification

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification required.

  • Act 34 clearance required.

  • Must hold current licensure in the state of practice or a multistate license under the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC), if applicable.
