- Receives instruction and trains in the use of various equipment as time and workload permits.
- Performs street repairs which include demolishing and excavating concrete, back filling, grading, setting concrete forms, pouring concrete, and finishing concrete, building storm drains and manholes and any other concrete as needed.
- Digs out, prepares, and places asphalt for pothole repair or patching.
- Digs/rakes/grades by hand, uses power hand tools including string trimmers, pole saws, chain saws, jackhammer.
- Provides landscaping services.
- Assists in setting up work zones and flags traffic.
- Mows with push mower, zero turn, tractor mower or side arm cutter.
- Puts down chemicals and salt during ice and snow conditions on streets.
- May be responsible for some landscaping as required.
- Picks up litter, debris, and animal carcasses within the Right of Way.
- Performs other related work as required.
Refuse Worker:- Serves as a loader on a sanitation packer truck; lifts refuse receptacles and dumps contents into trucks; picks up tree limbs and miscellaneous debris and loads onto truck; operates hydraulic controls to compact garbage in truck.
- Inspects truck at the beginning of each shift, making sure blade and compactor are functioning properly.
- Opens back gate of truck and pushes refuse out at dump site.
- Fuels refuse collection vehicles; washes and maintains refuse trucks, checking oil regularly; repairs broken trash cans.
- Maintains on-call status during inclement weather; responds and provides service in inclement weather, including snow storms, hurricanes, extreme heat, and rain.
- Communicates with coworkers via two-way radio to report breakdowns and other issues.
- Answers questions and inquiries from public concerning refuse collection.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness of truck by keeping truck cleaned, washed and greased.
- Collects and disposes of animal carcasses found lying beside the roadway.
- Assists boom truck operators.
- Assists leaf vacuum truck operator, ensuring proper collection of leaves.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Street Maintenance Worker:- Maintains and repairs City streets, curbs, and sidewalks; grades and paves new streets, patches and repairs existing streets, curbs and sidewalks.
- Operates heavy equipment for digging holes, loading materials, compacting asphalt, distributing tar, etc., such as backhoes, front-end loaders, compactors, rollers, tar distributors, etc.
- Installs and repairs storm drainage pipes, manholes, curbs and gutters; sets and finishes concrete; patches asphalt; landscapes roadways; installs curve boards.
- Cleans ditches and storm drains.
- Operates snow removal equipment, removing snow and ice from City streets.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Traffic Signal Technician- Installs and inspects traffic signal equipment, including underground wiring control boxes, signal heads, and traffic counters; trains in use of equipment, as time and workload permits.
- Troubleshoots problems with equipment to determine procedures for repair.
- Adjusts, repairs, cleans, and/or repairs traffic signal equipment, including signal heads, fuses, broken wires, lenses and bulbs.
- Assists in the installation of new traffic signal equipment and sets poles.
- Replaces and programs micro-processor traffic signal controllers; makes field adjustments in signal timing as directed by supervisory staff.
- Responds to emergency repair calls and complaints, on a 24-hour, 2-hour response basis; makes appropriate repairs in varying weather conditions.
- Conducts annual preventive maintenance examination of traffic signals and systems to ensure all are performing within established standards; repairs malfunctions that are detected.
- Locates and marks underground traffic signal facilities.
- Works with and close to energized electrical circuits.
- Receives and ships equipment to and from manufacturers and tests all incoming equipment and parts; ensures equipment meets given codes and guidelines.
- Maintains accurate records of daily manpower, equipment and materials usage.
Paint Technician- Paints lines, legends, traffic messages, crosswalks, curb markings, and parking spaces on street surfaces, curbs, and City-owned parking facilities.
- Sets up and removes barricades from work areas and detours.
- Operates and maintains street marking equipment and other specialized technical equipment, including the large computer-operator airless striper.
- Inventories materials and reports any necessary materials needs.
- Must have the ability to walk up to a mile consistently.
- Removes and adds painted markings for new construction.
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment.
- Operates grinding machines to remove old street markings.
- Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including maintenance and repair report.
- Prepares and/or processes various records and reports including equipment inspection form, and activity reports.
- Refers to equipment maintenance manuals, MSDS forms, employee handbook, traffic control manual (MUTCD), etc.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as street marking equipment, grinding machine, mechanic tools, etc.
- Uses a variety of tools such as mechanic tools, power tools, vehicle pressure washer, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as construction supplies, replacement parts, maintenance forms, equipment inspection forms, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including Equipment Operator, other employees, and the general public.
- Responds to emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Sign Technician- Installs, removes, replaces, repairs, and maintains traffic signs, street signs, directional, and informational signs.
- Sets up and removes barricades from work areas and detours.
- Inventories materials; reports any necessary materials needs.
- Removes and adds signs and meter posts for new construction.
- Removes graffiti from signs.
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment.
- Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including maintenance and repair report.
- Prepares and/or processes various records and reports including equipment inspection form, and activity reports.
- Refers to equipment maintenance manuals, MSDS forms, employee handbook, traffic control manual (MUTCD), etc.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as mechanic tools, posthole digger, bucket truck, etc.
- Uses a variety of tools such as mechanic tools, power tools, vehicle pressure washer, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as construction supplies, replacement parts, maintenance forms, equipment inspection forms, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including Sign Mechanic, other employees, and the general public.
- Responds to emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Utility System Worker- Operates a variety of equipment and machines such as backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, lawn mowers, string trimmers, air compressors, ditching machines, fuel truck, etc.
- Inspects and performs minor and preventative maintenance on equipment and machines.
- Prepares a variety of reports and submits reports to supervisors as required.
- May repair water and sewer services; repairing and performing maintenance on valves, hydrants, sewer mains, and manholes; backfills and levels ditches and excavations; grades and repairs roads affected by water and sewer repairs.
- May respond to requests for service concerning unstopping, clearing, and maintaining a sanitary sewer system.
- May perform landscaping duties such as mowing grass, trimming hedges, shrubbery, and weeds, and maintaining flower beds; sprays herbicides and pesticides.
- May perform leak detection surveys.
- May operate and test water and sewer valves.
- May work with work crews in the repairs and maintenance of the water and sewer distribution system.
- May oversee workers picking up refuse and emptying trash cans.
- May oversee workers maintaining sidewalk areas, building grounds, and landscaping.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Utility Field Tech- Operates motorized equipment used in the maintenance and distribution operations of the Public Utilities Department, including a backhoe, ditching machines, boring machines, jackhammers, lawn mowers, and other equipment used in the installation and repair of water and sewer mains, water services, pumps, valve boxes, hydrants, and associated fixtures and inspects and performs minor maintenance on equipment.
- Repairs water and sewer systems; repairs and performs maintenance on valves, hydrants and manholes; assists skilled laborers/mechanics with more complicated repairs to and maintenance of distribution systems.
- Backfills and levels ditches and excavations; grades and repairs roads affected by water and sewer repair.
- Assists with maintaining electrical and electronic systems, and calibrating and adjusting monitoring equipment, electronics, and process logic controllers as necessary.
- Performs maintenance on water and sewer facilities, including priming pumps, repairing electrical floats, checking control panels, operating emergency pumps, repairing vacuum systems, applying degreaser in wells, and releasing pressure from sewer lines.
- Assists lead worker in responding to calls for after hours or emergency repair work.
- Maintains grounds including trimming weeds, removing trees and stumps, cutting grass, etc.
- Monitors and maintains city-owned wells, water towers, pump stations, and vaults located in residential and commercial areas.
- Receives and maintains accurate inventory of parts and supplies; manages an effective material flow system from receiving to stockroom; prepares stockroom for annual inventory; makes inventory adjustments in computerized system.
- Inspects vehicles and reports any problems.
- Prepares related paperwork and reports and assists in recordkeeping and log maintenance.
- Assists mechanics when needed.
- May perform some carpentry duties.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Construction Inspector- Inspects construction projects and enforces City ordinances governing minimum standards and requirements of new sanitary sewer and water main construction, alterations, and repairs; roadway and associated infrastructure.
- Examines construction methods and materials and construction project location; ensuring compliance with City planning and development policy. Review project plans, revisions, and corresponding documents.
- Confers with contractors, property owners, developers, architects, engineers, and others regarding inspection requests, construction codes, building plans, etc.; examines and investigates methods and practices employed in local construction projects, recommending changes when necessary.
- Tests various construction materials to ensure adherence with applicable codes and standards.
- Oversees construction projects in the city.
- Inspects construction projects for work zone safety, and that erosion and sediment control practices are being adhered to.
- Measures installed quantities of construction; calculates percent completion; adjusts construction drawings to reflect actual work; diagnoses and solves engineering problems and reviews construction contracts and oversee test.
- Conducts final inspections on city and state right-of-way improvements for acceptance and maintenance of roadways.
- Prepares monthly estimates for capital projects. Prepares and maintains various records and reports pertaining to status of ongoing construction projects; schedules appointments; conducts final project inspection and recommends acceptance of work.
- Conducts required testing of systems during construction. Interprets site plans.
- Performs data collection activities as warranted; i.e. GPS valve and hydrant locations.
- Attends construction meetings with contractors, engineers, and inspectors.
- Fuels vehicles; takes vehicles to shop for maintenance and repairs; maintains appearance of vehicle.
