Public Works Seasonal Worker

This is an entry-level, seasonal position that provides unskilled labor and assistance to Public Works staff in support of routine maintenance, cleaning, inspection support, and site/grounds activities. Duties are performed under close supervision and are intended to support employees of higher classification. This position is not expected to independently perform skilled utility, technical stormwater, wastewater, or cemetery work.
General schedule and duties:
Typically Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a term of up to six (6) months (seasonal). Schedule may vary based on operational need, weather, and assignment; occasional weekend work may be required.
  • Perform activities to assist employees of higher classification in maintenance, cleaning, landscaping, and minor repair work at City facilities, rights-of-way, and Public Works work sites.
  • Assist with removal of debris, litter, and sediment from public property and infrastructure features including ditches, catch basins, grates, outfalls, and other drainage conveyance elements using appropriate hand tools.
  • Assist with housekeeping/grounds keeping of City-owned properties and assets (e.g., mowing, weed eating, blackberry removal, sweeping, pressure washing sidewalks/pathways and other hard surface areas, and general site cleanup).
  • Assist Public Works utility crews with routine sanitary sewer and stormwater maintenance activities as directed (e.g., staging tools/materials, supporting cleaning operations, assisting with inspections and documentation as assigned).
  • Assist with routine cleaning and basic maintenance of City vehicles, tools, and equipment; perform basic checks (e.g., fluids, tire condition) and report needed repairs.
  • Prepare, stage, load/unload, and provide basic care of tools, equipment, materials, cones, and barricades at job sites (no certified flagging required or expected).
  • As directed, assist with cemetery grounds maintenance and support services, including helping prepare areas for burial services and performing site cleanup.
  • Respond to questions and provide information within scope of knowledge or refer to employee of higher classification.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to perform work in accordance with sound safety practices.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with City staff, other organizations and the general public; ability to deal with the public in a pleasant and responsive manner conducive to positive public relations.
  • Physical strength and ability sufficient to perform manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable situations and in all types of weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • U.S. citizen or legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
  • Successfully pass Background Check.
Preferred:
  • One (1) year of similar outdoor labor or public works maintenance experience.
  • Experience using common hand and power tools (e.g., line trimmers, blowers, pressure washers).
  • Experience operating and maintaining small, medium, and large mowing equipment.
This is a non-represented, seasonal position and is eligible for overtime.
