About the City

Woodinville, Washington is a premier tourist destination with a population of about 14,000, though the City will likely grow rapidly over the next five years or so. This growth is resulting in lots of exciting projects and programs. Located about 20 miles northeast of Seattle, Woodinville offers the benefits of a bustling urban area against the backdrop of the picturesque Sammamish River Valley. Woodinville is known for its tourism industries with over 130 wineries, breweries, and distilleries and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.


The Public Works intern is a paid part-time internship program designed for undergraduate, graduate, or advanced degree students who are interested in gaining municipal experience in stormwater management, public outreach, City asset data management, civil engineering, policy, contract management, road and street operations, and other essential operations of the City. This internship will be primarily focused on stormwater data management and public outreach, with the opportunity to experience other areas of Public Works. The intern will report to the Operations Manager with daily assignments and will be supervised by the Surface Water Program Coordinator in the Public Works Department. The Intern will have an opportunity to learn about Public Works operations at a high level.


The workplan for the intern relies on coordination with various City staff and may be changed at the City's discretion as needs arise. Interns will also have the opportunity to gain exposure to Permitting and Capital Improvement projects by shadowing professional engineers and providing field and office engineering support for on-site inspections.

As the Public Works Intern you will

Public Works Asset Management:

  • Use the City’s Asset Management software, ArcGIS online, or other programs to perform a variety of tasks
  • Use construction as-built record drawings to identify new assets and create data.
  • Respond to citizen public safety and right of way maintenance concerns.
  • Collect or verify asset data using Google Maps and by collecting field data.
  • Collect field data for the stormwater behavior change campaign.
  • Perform quality control analysis on asset data and implement data updates.
  • Field verify ADA compliance for sidewalk and ADA ramp data.

Create outreach materials:

  • ESRI Story Maps
  • Infographics for reports to City Council
  • Social media posts or outreach materials for Capital Improvement Projects
  • Letters or postcards for program or project communication

Policy, Budget and Project Management:

  • Draft Staff Reports for City Council meetings.
  • Draft budget request proposals.
  • Review planning documents.
  • Draft City code updates.
  • Assist in creating grant application materials and applying for grants.


Skills and Behaviors for success

  • Knowledge of stormwater and surface water management principles
  • Knowledge of engineering concepts, techniques, practices and principles
  • Knowledge of personal computers and computer software, including Microsoft products
  • Knowledge of digital communication techniques, including web and social media
  • Knowledge of graphic design programs, including Adobe products or Canva
  • Knowledge of stormwater education and outreach principles, stormwater pollution source control principles, or stormwater NPDES permit compliance
  • Knowledge of ESRI GIS software is preferred
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and actively seek guidance when needed
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize work and complete tasks within prescribed timeframes
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather


To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; AND
  • Two years of undergraduate study in environmental science or studies, water resources, civil engineering, or similar subject(s); OR
  • In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill, and ability to proficiently perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.


Physical Requirements Office workers

Work is primarily performed in an indoor setting, with occasional fieldwork. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must frequently sit and talk or hear; occasionally stand, walk, grip or feel with hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The nature of the work has frequent interruptions. Requires public communication skills. May occasionally be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and holidays. The ability to operate a personal computer is required. This position may also require substantial phone use and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences. Assigned duties are to be performed while adhering to the City’s operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.

Compensation, Classification and Labor Representation

The full salary range for this position is step # 1 $25.96 per hour to step # 2 $27.00 per hour. The appointment will typically be made at step # 1 $25.96 per hour.

This position is eligible for overtime and is non-represented. It is classified as an Intern. Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and may not include all specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
