Psychiatrist (MD/DO) – Veterans Mental Health Services

Position Overview

We are seeking a Board-Eligible or Board-Certified Psychiatrist (MD/DO) to provide comprehensive mental health care to a diverse Veteran population, including geriatric and post-deployment combat Veterans. This role involves a mix of clinical care, leadership, crisis intervention, and community-based services across inpatient, outpatient, and virtual settings.

This is a mission-driven position supporting Veterans who may be experiencing complex psychiatric conditions and psychosocial challenges such as homelessness, unemployment, and trauma-related disorders.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Diagnostic Care

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic assessments
  • Provide medication evaluation, management, and psychotherapy
  • Conduct suicide risk assessments and crisis interventions
  • Diagnose and treat conditions including PTSD, depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use disorders
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests and consultations to guide treatment decisions

Emergency & Crisis Response

  • Manage psychiatric emergencies in outpatient, inpatient, Emergency Department, and community settings
  • Assess need for hospitalization and coordinate appropriate level of care
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention when clinically indicated

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as a Mental Health Team Leader, coordinating specialty referrals and triaging consults
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in treatment planning conferences
  • Contribute to integrated care coordination across services
  • May supervise and teach psychiatric residents and trainees

Community-Based & Virtual Care

  • Conduct home visits for Veterans using a personal vehicle when required
  • Collaborate with community partners to support continuity of care
  • Provide telepsychiatry services via VA Video Connect

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in VA electronic health records
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Privacy Act, VA policies, TJC, and CARF standards
  • Participate in on-call duties as assigned
  • Adhere to all federal and institutional clinical practice guidelines

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Completion of an ACGME or AOA accredited Psychiatry residency
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth
  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Ability to use electronic health record systems and virtual care platforms

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with Veteran populations
  • Background in trauma-informed care and PTSD treatment
  • Experience managing complex psychosocial cases (homelessness, unemployment, limited support systems)
  • Subspecialty or strong experience in substance use disorders
  • Prior academic or teaching involvement in residency programs
  • Experience delivering telepsychiatry services

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Primary location: Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans’ Hospital (Loma Linda, CA)
  • May include assignments at Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs)
  • Required community-based visits using personal vehicle when needed
  • Hybrid care model: onsite, community-based, and virtual (VA Video Connect)
  • On-call responsibilities as assigned
