Position Overview
The Project Manager / Estimator is responsible for estimating, bidding, subcontractor coordination, budget control, client coordination, and managing asphalt paving projects from inception through completion. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on time, within scope, and within budget while maintaining high levels of client satisfaction and profitability. The position requires a strong understanding of asphalt paving operations, materials, equipment, and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating
- Prepare accurate cost estimates for asphalt paving projects including materials, labor, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead.
- Conduct site visits to evaluate conditions and identify project risks and opportunities.
- Interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to develop comprehensive bids.
- Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing.
- Maintain estimating databases and track historical cost data.
- Prepare and submit competitive project proposals.
Project Management
- Manage awarded projects from pre-construction through project closeout.
- Develop project budgets, and work plans to provide to operations.
- Coordinate with field superintendents, foremen, and crews to ensure successful project execution.
- Monitor daily progress, cost reports, and production quantities.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, safety requirements, and company standards.
- Identify and resolve project issues, delays, and scope changes.
- Prepare and submit change orders when required.
- Track project costs and profitability through job costing systems.
- Prepare project billing invoices and assist with project closeout documentation.
- Provide project updates and performance reports to leadership.
- Participate in pre-construction planning meetings and post-project reviews.
Client & Vendor Coordination
- Maintain strong relationships with clients, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Provide consistent project communication throughout the project lifecycle.
- Represent Chemcote professionally during meetings, site visits, and project discussions.
Technical Skills
- Experience with estimating software such as PlanSwift or similar platforms
- Knowledge of ComputerEase or construction accounting/project software a plus.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Project).
- Experience with cost control, budget management, and resource allocation.
Position Requirements
- Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5 years of estimating and project management
- Proven leadership experience in the construction industry.
- Strong understanding of asphalt paving practices, materials, and equipment.
- Familiarity with DOT specifications and local agency requirements.
- Ability to problem solve, make decisions, and adapt to changing project conditions.
- Ability to actively participate in job site inspections and field operations.
- Willingness to travel to job sites throughout Central Ohio.
- Strong leadership, communication, and time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
