Vanport Marine is a marine repair small-business in Portland, OR. Vanport Marine is a prime contractor, performing topside and voyage repairs for ocean-going vessels, tugs, and barges in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, California, Hawaii, and remote locations. Our in-house crew of highly trained ship-fitters, welders, pipe fitters, machinists, and millwrights, executes the most demanding repairs and modifications to the satisfaction of U.S. Coast Guard, ABS, Lloyds, Class NK, and other regulatory and certification agencies. Our clients include USCG, NOAA, other Federal Agencies, and private maritime and industrial customers, valued from $25k to $3mil. Vanport’s cross-functional management team works together to win contracts and execute profitable work.
We are seeking an experienced ship repair estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a several years experience in marine repair estimating, BS/BE in engineering, and federal contracting and project management experience. Transferable skills such as a strong background in ship repair, structural estimating, and/or engineering will be considered.
Responsibilities:
- Planning and development of estimates primarily within the Marine markets and Industrial fabrication and construction projects. Clients include federal agencies (USCG, NOAA, MDA/DOD, USACE, MSC) and private Maritime and Industrial customers. Estimates will range in value from $25k to $3mil.
- Responds timely and thoroughly to bid requests ensuring bid packages are complete and consistent with the desired deliverables.
- Reads and interprets drawings, specifications and RFQ documents for prospective project.
- Attends ship checks, and pre-bid meetings with customers. This sometimes requires out-of-town travel, up to 20%.
- Develops labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor estimates for project and develops estimates incorporating all costs for review by company leadership. Reviews subcontractor proposals for coverage of project scope and develops “make or buy” analyses.
- Develops preliminary work schedules.
- Works with management and others in negotiation of contractual terms and insurance requirements for new work.
- Upon project award, works closely with and assists Project Manager to ensure materials and equipment needed are ordered and delivered timely, and subcontract work is well-coordinated.
- Maintains an open and frequent line of communication with Project Manager to understand status of work-in-process, and assists as necessary with administrative coordination in dealing with changing needs of projects, changes in scope, change order requests, etc.
- Maintains a high degree of integrity, loyalty, and honesty; not divulging to outside parties’ information of a confidential nature pertaining to the company's operations or bids.
- Seeks out new work opportunities, or to improve existing systems or processes and perform other related duties as assigned.

Salary DOE, negotiable.

Application Question(s):
- The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's degree in Engineering. Do you have same or similar degree?
- Ship checks are aboard vessels of various sizes. Are you able to navigate ladders and into confined spaces?
- Required travel is limited, however Estimators will need to complete ship checks/site visits at various piers (including CA, WA, AK, and HI) for understanding of scope of work for bid proposals.
Are you able to travel out of state, even with short notice?
Experience:
- Marine or Maritime Repair or Structural estimating: 1 year (Preferred)
License/Certification:
- Driver's License (Required)
