Product Safety Engineer, Cupertino, CA
- The Product Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring global safety compliance and certification of consumer electronics, battery-powered, and medical device products. This role leads and supports product safety evaluations, hands-on compliance testing, risk assessments, and certification activities in accordance with international safety standards such as IEC/UL/EN/CSA 60950-1, 62368-1, and 62133.
- The position partners closely with cross-functional teams including design engineering, firmware/software, manufacturing, and external test laboratories to identify safety hazards, mitigate risks, and support successful product commercialization. The engineer will interpret and apply safety standards to new and innovative technologies, review and approve engineering documentation, and support manufacturing process improvements to safeguard product safety.
- The role requires strong technical judgment, analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex safety and compliance topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience with global product homologation, FMEA or Safety Fault Tree Analysis, and ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory practices is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the attainment of global product safety certifications in accordance with IEC 60950, IEC 62368-1, and other applicable international safety standards to enable worldwide commercialization.
- Plan, support, and perform product safety compliance testing, including preparation and review of CB test reports.
- Collaborate with laboratory technicians by providing detailed test plans, operational guidance, troubleshooting support, and firmware/software documentation required for system operation.
- Evaluate safety compliance of product designs across consumer electronics, battery systems, and medical devices.
- Analyze technical documentation, research data, and test results to assess compliance with regional and international safety standards.
- Perform component-level safety assessments of electrical circuits, schematics, and assemblies.
- Lead or support Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) activities and other risk assessment methodologies.
- Apply core engineering principles to proactively identify safety hazards and product risks.
- Use analytical and logical reasoning to evaluate design strengths, weaknesses, and potential failure modes.
- Identify risks early in the development lifecycle and drive timely mitigation actions.
- Interpret and apply safety standards to innovative designs, emerging technologies, and novel system architectures.
- Effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
- Review and approve engineering drawings and technical documentation for safety compliance.
- Partner with manufacturing teams to improve processes, resolve safety issues, and ensure sustained product safety.
- Collaborate with cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams to define, document, and implement product safety requirements.
- Support escalation activities related to safety compliance, testing deviations, or certification challenges.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating product safety and regulatory compliance against at least three of the following standards: IEC/EN/UL/CSA 60950-1, 62368-1, 60065, or 62133.
- Proven experience conducting product safety testing in accordance with IEC/EN/UL/CSA 60950-1, 62368-1, 60065, or 62133.
- Hands-on experience executing safety tests and assessing hardware designs for regulatory compliance.
- Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience presenting technical information and moderating discussions with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically as required.
Preferred / Special Qualifications
- Proven experience supporting global product homologation and international certification processes.
- Demonstrated proficiency in FMEA and/or Safety Fault Tree Analysis methodologies.
- Strong ability to anticipate potential risks and proactively address issues before they materialize.
- Experience working in ISO/IEC 17025-compliant laboratory environments, including maintenance of test equipment and procedures.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $51.21 - $95.90/hr.
