Under the direction of the CarverLink Manager, the Principal Fiber Network IT Engineer serves as a senior technical leader for CarverLink’s fiber network and core internet systems. It plays a key role in designing, implementing, and supporting the infrastructure that keeps services running reliably. Responsibilities include overseeing the installation and support of fiber network equipment, core and edge network systems, firewalls, and data center connectivity. This role also provides expert-level troubleshooting and guidance to resolve complex issues that impact critical services. The position ensures CarverLink’s network operates securely and efficiently by following established design standards, coordinating with vendors, and maintaining strong operational practices.
  • Monitors the operational health of the CarverLink fiber plant, optical transport systems, routing and switching platforms, firewalls, and data center interconnects across connected locations. Utilizes network monitoring platforms, optical diagnostics, and performance analytics to detect outages, degradations, capacity constraints, and security events affecting mission-critical services.
  • Provides principal-level troubleshooting for complex service-affecting incidents involving core routing (BGP), internal routing protocols, switching, segmentation (VLAN/VRF), firewall policy, distributed denial-of-service mitigation, and data center systems. Performs structured incident assessment, containment, remediation, and root cause analysis.
  • Responds to, coordinates, and leads restoration of unplanned fiber cuts, relocations, splice failures, and third-party fiber incidents affecting CarverLink-owned or leased infrastructure. Performs and interprets optical time-domain reflectometer testing, optical power validation, and physical plant diagnostics.
  • Implements and supports approved enhancements to outside plant systems, optical transport, core routing and switching platforms, virtualization environments, domain name services, and firewall systems. Participates in deployment planning and execution, including hardware selection, configuration standards, security controls, following established technical direction and design approvals.
  • Supports and implements improvements to network redundancy, segmentation, and disaster recovery capabilities based on defined resiliency and continuity requirements. Performs firewall policy implementation, routing policy configuration, and distributed denial-of service mitigation, and provides technical input for risk assessments associated with infrastructure changes.
  • Leads technical execution of fiber relocations due to road construction, bridge replacement, and infrastructure projects, ensuring work aligns with approved project scopes and schedules. Coordinates maintenance windows, splice activities, testing, and service restoration in accordance with established operational procedures.
  • Serves as senior technical resource for public safety agencies, courts, hospitals, and other community entities providing connectivity configuration support, performance troubleshooting, and vendor coordination. Acts as technical escalation point for service issues impacting mission-critical interconnections.
  • Maintains documentation of network topology diagrams, IP addressing plans, routing policies, firewall configurations, and lifecycle records. Establishes documentation standards and ensures configuration control practices are followed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
•Bachelor's Degree in Computer Information Systems or a related field and five (5) years of related experience, or
•Associate's Degree in Computer Information Systems or a related field and eight (8) years of related experience, or
•High School Diploma/GED and twelve (12) years of related experience
•Valid Driver's License or evidence of mobility
•CJIS fingerprinting required

The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, and background investigation including CJIS fingerprinting.
