Principal Engineer - Flood Risk Modelling

As Principal Engineer (Flood Risk Modelling) within our Water Team, you will take responsibility to provide technical support, resource & financial management, mentoring and independently deliver flood modelling projects to ensure accurate and efficient project delivery for internal and external clients.

The role requirement includes leading projects based on hydraulic modelling and flood risk based studies using industry standard software (Flood Modeller Pro, Tuflow, Estry, HEC-RAS, Infoworks ICM 2D) as well as other projects requiring detailed technical analysis and providing support to junior colleagues. 

You will be expected to have a strong background/working knowledge on 1d-2d hydraulic modelling, hydrological modelling, major flood alleviation schemes, highway infrastructure projects and GIS based analytical tools with a thorough understanding of the UK Water industry and legislation.

  • Works collaboratively within the team and proactively supports junior staff in developing their technical knowledge and to independently deliver the tasks/projects.

  • Excellent grasp on technical design procedures and standards, policy, contracts and specifications and technical software relevant to the UK water industry.

  • Ability to recognise situations where tasks can be delegated to help develop others and improve time management.

  • Demonstrable experience in checking and reviewing work produced by the technical team with a strong knowledge of reviewing/QA procedures on hydraulic modelling, hydrology and flood risk management based projects.

  • Proactively contributes to the culture of safety, health and well-being of self and of individuals and the team; recognises the impact of what we do on the safety of others

  • Demonstrable experience of leading/working collaboratively with a large team in the delivery of projects (or section of work on larger multi-disciplinary projects)

  • Lead projects and large-frameworks and provide thorough guidance to junior colleagues on flood risk assessments, 1d-2d hydraulic modelling, hydrology, option appraisal studies and GIS based desk studies.

  • Excellent working knowledge of analytical skills on hydraulics, hydrology and hydraulic design. Excellent GIS skills on data management and excellent working knowledge of QGIS, ArcGIS and/or Mapinfo.

  • Ability to review detailed project reports and technical notes and an ability to guide junior staff on detailed technical writing.

  • Demonstrable experience in application of Project Management procedures, BMS and proposal development.  Strong experience of financial management of projects and an ability to monitor project financials, programme in adherence to BMS policies.

  • Continuously upskill on the industry standards, specifications and tools used in the UK water sector and cascade the skills to junior colleagues.

  • Working towards Chartership with ICE or CIWEM (Desirable)
