Job Title: Probabilistic Risk Analysis Engineer
JOB SUMMARY
This position will be in the SNC Corporate Office and will report to the Risk Modeling Manager. This engineer is responsible for performing engineering evaluations in support of Southern Nuclear Operating Company nuclear generating plants. This engineer will be part of the Risk Modeling groups in the Risk Informed Engineering (RIE) department. The RIE department is focused on being the industry leader in risk-informed decisions making by developing, maintaining, and applying state-of-the-art tools and models. The PRA Engineer work includes, but is not limited to, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting technical inputs, demonstrating regulatory compliance, and performing and managing tasks and projects as part of a team of PRA Engineers. This position requires an individual to be a self-starter, organized, able to prioritize multiple tasks, and to have strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. The person needs to be flexible, demonstrate initiative, and work well in a high-pressure, fast-paced, and deadline-oriented environment.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties of the PRA Engineer include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for performing risk-related engineering evaluations used for Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) model development and maintenance in support of the electric generating plants operated by Southern Nuclear Company (SNC). These include SNC’s existing Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) and Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) nuclear plants
- Reviewing PRA inputs such as design changes, emergency operating procedure updates, and licensing basis changes and assessing the impact on PRA models
- Managing small, medium, and large projects using Project Management principles. Engaging cross-functionally within the RIE department, the broader SNC organization, and with vendors to achieve goals
- Performing PRA model updates and providing risk informed programs support.
- Interpreting and ensuring compliance with risk informed regulatory requirements, policies and standards, including but not limited to RG 1.200, RG 1.174, RG 1.177. Interfacing with the regulator.
- Perform assigned engineering task by applying PRA engineering principles.
- Writing and reviewing technical reports.
- Making presentations.
- Performing special studies.
- Assisting with audits and inspections including support of significance determination program and emergency request.
- Providing inputs to and implementing policies and procedures.
- Travel to plant sites and industry events in support of SNC objectives
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, or nuclear) from an accredited college or university, or Professional Engineer license, is required
- Master’s of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering or foreign equivalent is preferred.
Background/Experience Requirements:
- Knowledge or experience with nuclear power plant design, systems, and/or operation is required.
- Nuclear power plant experience is preferred.
- Prior direct PRA work experience related to Internal Events, Internal Flooding, Fire, and/or Seismic PRA is an advantage.
- Experience with standard PRA tools such as CAFTA and Phoenix is a plus.
- High degree of analytical skills is preferred.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Organizational and time management skills are highly preferred.
- High degree of computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, and other database software) required.
- Demonstrated team player and self-starter.
- Be able to adapt to the changing priorities.
