Job Description

This role involves performing general labor tasks in a marine and industrial environment using a variety of portable power and hand tools, including grinders, drills, saws, and wrenches. You will complete power tooling work, perform paint touch-ups, and wrap materials or equipment as needed, often in confined spaces and at various heights.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a wide range of portable power and hand tools, such as grinders, drills, saws, wrenches, and other equipment, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform general labor duties in a shipyard and industrial setting, supporting coatings, maintenance, and related activities.
  • Carry out power tooling tasks to prepare, clean, or finish surfaces and structures as directed.
  • Touch up paint on marine and industrial surfaces, ensuring clean, even coverage and proper surface preparation.
  • Wrap and secure materials, components, or equipment according to job specifications and safety guidelines.
  • Work in confined spaces and at various heights, maintaining strict adherence to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Serve as firewatch when required, monitoring hot work areas and ensuring all fire safety protocols are followed.
  • Use hand tools and hand-held equipment to complete assigned tasks, including gripping, handling, and manipulating tools for extended periods.
  • Follow all site access and security procedures, including maintaining required badges and attending mandatory safety classes.
  • Wear and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, and participate in fit testing and medical evaluations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, promptly reporting hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and team members to complete daily work assignments on schedule.
  • Lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds as part of routine job duties.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience working in a shipyard environment.
  • Hands-on experience using hand and power tools, including grinders, drills, saws, and wrenches.
  • general labor work in industrial or marine settings.
  • Ability to perform basic painting tasks, including touch-up work on various surfaces.
  • Experience working safely in confined spaces and at various heights.
  • Capability to serve as firewatch and follow hot work and fire safety procedures.
  • Ability to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Physical ability to walk frequently and to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, and crawl as required by the job.
  • Sufficient vision to see up close, at a distance, and peripherally, with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus in low light conditions.
  • Ability to obtain medical clearance for respirator use and successfully complete a respirator fit test for an MSA half-face respirator.
  • Willingness to complete required drug screening, audiogram, and other medical evaluations.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to access and drive on base to reach the jobsite.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience in marine or industrial coatings, scaffolding, or related trades is beneficial.
  • Comfort working in an industrial shipyard environment with varying tasks and conditions.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours and Saturdays when needed.
  • Ability to follow detailed safety instructions and participate in a 4-hour safety class prior to starting work.
  • Strong attention to safety, including consistent use of PPE and adherence to all site rules and procedures.

Work Environment

This position is based in a shipyard and industrial setting, where you will regularly walk throughout the facility and frequently stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl at various heights and in confined spaces. You may occasionally sit, and you will routinely reach with your hands and arms, using your hands to feel, grip, and handle tools and materials. The role requires you to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds and to work in conditions that may include low light, varying temperatures, and uneven surfaces. You will use a variety of hand and power tools, and you must wear required personal protective equipment, including a respirator when needed. Work hours are typically Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the possibility of additional hours and Saturday work based on project needs. Before starting, you will attend a 4-hour safety class and complete all required medical screenings and fit testing. Reliable transportation is necessary to access the base and reach the jobsite.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hampton, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
