This is responsible seasonal recreation work assisting in the management of a municipal swimming pool.
An employee in this class supervises swimmers, takes appropriate lifesaving action, administers first aid, assists in planning, scheduling, publicizing and evaluating the water activity program for a municipal pool. The summer season for employees in this class begins April 1 and ends December 1 each year. The winter season for employees in this class begins November 1 and ends May 1 each year.
Works under the supervision of a Pool Manager or independently under general supervision.
Assists in the operation of City pool facilities to maintain safe swimming conditions and ensure the safety of swimmers. Assists in maintaining the filter and chlorination systems for the pools to assure proper water heat, chlorine levels and cleanliness. Assures that each lifeguard station has the correct equipment and safety apparatus. Assists in arranging for availability and proper use of first aid supplies and applies approved first aid. Assists in the participation and scheduling of on-going staff training programs. Assists in developing, teaching, and supervising swim lesson curriculums that are offered to the community. Assists in the recruiting and retention efforts for new and existing lifeguards. Performs emergency rescue operations by taking appropriate lifesaving action which may require entering the pool to administer this action. Assists in scheduling staff and assigns work details to assure the safety of operation and cleanliness of facility and grounds. Assists in securing facility after hours of operation. Monitors facility for problems requiring maintenance and plans for resolution. Assists in planning, coordinating, supervising and publicizing water activity programs and special aquatic programs. Assists in taking and investigating complaints and works with management for their resolution. Cleans and organizes equipment, maintaining records and inventory of supplies and equipment and reordering as necessary. Assists in closing pool because of inclement weather or other safety concerns. Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of reports and records such as daily and class attendance, incident and accident reports and inventory records. Uses personal computer with a variety of computer software to enter and retrieve data in order to produce memos and send and retrieve e-mail. Answers telephone and uses voice mail. Assists in maintaining necessary health and safety standards according to regulations. Assists in scheduling and organizing all public and group use of facility. Drives to City pools to conduct chemical checks and supervise staff. Lifts up to fifty pounds of supplies or equipment to storage area and in and out of car. Adheres to all City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Learns and follows City and Departmental practices and safety procedures. Performs related work as required.Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. and six months of paid experience as a Lifeguard. The experience requirement can be substituted with two years of college coursework (64 semester hours or 96 quarter hours). Possession of a valid Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification. Possession of a valid Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification or must obtain within one year of employment. Possession of a valid state of Ohio driver’s license.
Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, first aid, AED, and rescue procedures. Knowledge of principles and practices for providing excellent customer service. Skill in judgment and decision making. Skill in monitoring or assessing situations and taking corrective action.
Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of subordinates. Ability to train subordinates in all aspects of the work. Ability to develop and implement swim lesson curriculums. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective employee and public relations. Ability to operate computers with standard business software. Ability to apply first aid. Ability to perform artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance. Ability to detect actions that may endanger the safety of participants or others. Ability to remain undistracted from the primary goal of maintaining discipline and order. Ability to maintain surveillance over persons using a public swimming facility. Ability to deal effectively with the public, supervisors, subordinates, and associates. Ability to lift supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request.This is a classified position.
The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for related experience.Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER’S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
