Position: Platform Engineer

Employment Type: Full-time - Hybrid

Location: Downers Grove, IL

About us:

For over 20 years, Trossen Robotics has been at the forefront of delivering reliable, high-quality robotics solutions that bring real value to our customers. Our pragmatic approach to product design means we focus on what truly matters: usability, durability, and lifelong support. As partners to researchers, engineers, and creators of all kinds, we’re proud to have built a reputation for hardware that grows with you, empowering ideas and unlocking breakthroughs across countless applications. At Trossen Robotics, we’re driven by curiosity, guided by practicality, and excited to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in robotics.

About the role:

Trossen Robotics is hiring a Platform Engineer to build the cloud infrastructure powering physical AI. You'll own the systems behind petabyte-scale data collection, GPU orchestration across multiple cloud providers, and management tooling for robots deployed around the world. This role wears three hats: operating the cloud, driving architecture on new platform capabilities, and shipping features end-to-end across backend and frontend. It suits someone who wants the breadth and is ready to own all three.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive architecture on data storage at scale, GPU training orchestration across providers, and data processing pipelines
  • Build FastAPI backends and React frontends end-to-end, partnering on product scope and API shape
  • Design and evolve PostgreSQL schemas, including safe migrations under production load
  • Manage AWS infrastructure as code across environments, with CI/CD and monitoring that catches regressions early
  • Own the operations of the platform: availability, security, and cost
  • Raise the quality bar across design review, code review, and testing practices

Requirements:

  • 4+ years building and running scalable cloud systems, with hands-on AWS experience (IAM, VPC, RDS, S3, Secrets Manager, etc.)
  • Strong Python backend experience with a typed web framework (FastAPI, Django, or similar) and a mature ORM
  • Good grasp of cloud security, including OAuth/OIDC, token verification, and scoped access control at both the route and resource levels
  • Worked with structured and unstructured databases, including query tuning, transactions, and migrations on live data
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD tools
  • Can make and defend load-bearing architectural decisions
  • Comfortable being the escalation point when production breaks

Nice-to-haves:

  • Worked with GPU instances in the cloud, including managed training services or multi-provider GPU setups
  • Experience with observability tooling for distributed systems
  • Worked on systems where accuracy and idempotency matter (billing, metering, transactions), or on distributed storage
  • Hands-on experience with IoT, robotics, or edge deployments, especially the cloud-side systems that support them
  • Interest in physical AI, robotics foundation models, or the data, training, and deployment loop that makes them possible
  • Prior work at a startup or early-stage environment

Why this role:

Most cloud roles are either pure ops or pure feature work. This one is both, at a stage where your architectural decisions will shape the platform for years. Physical AI is one of the most exciting frontiers in ML right now, and we're building the data and training infrastructure layer behind the models. We're a small team with real ownership and no layers between you and shipping.

Compensation:

  • $115,000-$160,000/year base
  • End-of-year bonus based on individual and company performance
  • 401(k) plan
  • Medical and dental insurance
  • Paid time off
