PLANT OPERATOR 1 (WATER RECLAMATION OPERATOR IN TRAINING)

Under direct supervision, this employee is responsible for monitoring the proper operation of and controlling the various processes and equipment in a facility including wastewater plants, pump stations, and wet weather facilities. Ensure permit compliance. May perform process maintenance tasks to ensure normal, continuous operations. Performs related duties as required. Maintain clean and safe work environment.

Knowledge of:
High school mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; solving word problems using mathematical equations); high school algebra desirable. Safety protocols for working in hazardous environments and under inclement weather conditions.
Wastewater collection systems and their interaction with plant facilities.
Chemical and biological treatment processes and strategies for wastewater control.
Respiratory protection devices to prevent exposure to toxic fumes, dust, and airborne particles.
Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
Permits and regulatory requirements for wastewater facilities. Gauges, diagrams, charts, and computer monitors

Skill to:
Perform calculations to solve practical problems. Keep accurate written and electronic records. Carry and maintain a city-issued communication device and monitor as required while on duty. Operate and maintain plant equipment in a safe manner (including skimming, shoveling, turning large valves, controlling high pressure water hoses, climb ladders, replace shear pins, clean filters, and strainers).
Monitor and make adjustments to process equipment in the field and on SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) to ensure proper and safe operations. Use various hand and power tools.
Collect samples in various containers using tools or automated sampling equipment.
Attach and detach discharge hoses, place submersible pumps in underwater tanks, pits, channels, etc. Operate a personal computer and other standard office equipment. Utilize various computer software, including but not limited to SCADA, CMMS, Office Suite, Eops, etc. Open and close valves sized up to 96 inches, including some which require overhand or hand-over-hand operation.
Move containers of grit, screening, sludge, etc., using large equipment, including overhead cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, or other equipment.
Transport, set up, and use hoses varying in size. Maintain a clean work environment.
Wipe and wash equipment and follow assigned cleaning schedule.
Operate assigned vehicle or equipment, for which you are qualified, in the course of duty. Perform operational preventive maintenance tasks.
Operate and maintain wastewater analytical equipment and samplers. Run a variety of analytical testing, including permitted and process control.


Ability to:
Work in hazardous environments following safety protocols, including inclement weather. Recognize and respond to process conditions that may lead to process failures or problems. Read and follow instructions. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with supervisors and coworkers.
Remain calm in stressful situations. Respond to alerts from various sources, including telephone, alarm signals, visual alerts on SCADA, and unusual noises in the plant. Contact additional personnel as needed for staff shortages or maintenance emergencies. Lift up to 60 lbs.
Wear an air supplied and/or filter respiratory protection device in a manner that provides the required protection against toxic fumes, oxygen deficiency, dust, and/or airborne particles. Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Interact with internal and external customers professionally.
Follow instructions for filling staff shortages or calling in emergency coverage for various job classifications while maintaining proper records. Climb and descend ladders up to 25 feet.

Monitors the operation of various processes and equipment to ensure that the process is operating according to specifications and operating manuals.
Operates and make process adjustments using computerized control systems (SCADA). Performs maintenance for machinery (pumps, compressors, motors, chemical feed equipment, valves, etc.) and plant facilities to ensure normal, continuous operation of unit processes, related mechanical and control equipment.
Loads and unloads wastewater treatment chemicals. May mix chemicals to prepare solutions. Responds to telephone calls and messages and alarm signals for emergencies such as fluid leaks (chemicals, water, etc.), equipment changes and failures, process failures, high level alarms, etc.
Working knowledge of current safety policies, standard operating procedures (SOP), and other procedures and professional practices required for completing job duties. Identifies unsafe practices and conditions and brings such matters to the attention of the crew leader or supervisor.
Tours the assigned water treatment plant and grounds to check for unusual or faulty operation of pumps, motors, and equipment.
May be required to drive a light truck, van, or car to various plant sites. May perform laboratory analysis to evaluate treatment process, i.e., chlorine residual. Assists those contacted in the course of duty in an effective, efficient, and professional manner.

OPEN:
Each applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED. Completing coursework in high school mathematics, including algebra, as well as high school chemistry and biology is preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a valid Driver's License. May be required to work irregular shift including nights, weekends and holidays.
Capability to work safely in confined spaces and at elevated heights. Must be able to remove facial hair as needed to ensure proper use and fit of a respirator.
Must have or obtain an Ohio EPA Class I, Class II, or Class III Water Reclamation Professional Operator certification within 24 months of hire.
Must show proof of taking exam at least 3 times within the first 12 months and continued proof of additional attempts until a passing score is achieved within the first 24 months. Failure to meet these requirements may result in failure of probation or termination.Environmental Conditions:
