Job Title: Plant EngineerJob DescriptionThe Plant Engineer leads the implementation and optimization of manufacturing equipment, processes, and procedures across multiple facilities. This role combines hands-on engineering with project management, providing technical support to production lines, driving continuous improvement, and managing capital projects from concept through startup. The Plant Engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams, supports a heavy industrial manufacturing environment, and contributes to the successful launch and ongoing performance of a new facility.
Responsibilities
- Apply sound engineering principles to implement new manufacturing equipment, processes, and procedures.
- Study existing equipment and processes, and recommend techniques to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency.
- Coordinate design activities and equipment installations with other departments to ensure smooth execution and minimal disruption to operations.
- Provide technical support to process lines, including investigating improvement opportunities, troubleshooting equipment issues, and responding to operator inquiries.
- Complete engineering calculations to validate the implementation and performance of new equipment or processes.
- Represent the engineering function on cross-functional teams and contribute technical expertise to collaborative projects.
- Prepare detailed specifications for equipment and installation, and secure bids from suppliers and contractors.
- Analyze equipment and contractor installation specifications to ensure they meet technical, safety, and performance requirements.
- Prepare layout and design drawings as required to support projects and process changes.
- Requisition materials and equipment for capital projects in alignment with project scope and budget.
- Plan, schedule, and supervise construction activities related to capital projects and equipment installations.
- Participate in the startup, commissioning, and evaluation of new equipment to verify performance and resolve issues.
- Prepare and deliver progress reports on capital projects to keep stakeholders informed of status, risks, and milestones.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation, including project files, datasheets, drawings, schematics, and revision histories.
- Use data-driven decision making and process automation tools to monitor performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Essential Skills- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience with process improvement and/or process equipment implementation in a manufacturing environment.
- Capital expenditure (CapEx) project management experience, including planning, execution, and reporting.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with both mechanical and electrical systems.
- Hands-on experience working with process equipment, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Background in manufacturing engineering or project engineering within a process or heavy industrial setting.
- Proficiency in continuous improvement methodologies applied to manufacturing processes.
- Excellent knowledge of computer hardware and software applications relevant to engineering and project work.
- Ability to make data-driven decisions and effectively use process automation tools and information technology.
- Strong organizational skills with a thorough and detail-oriented approach to documentation and project management.
- Ability to remain confident and steady under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Understanding of manufacturing methods and industrial production environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience supporting multiple manufacturing locations from a central corporate office.
- Ability to prepare and interpret layout and design drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Strong communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and contractors.
- Comfort working in a heavy industrial environment when on site at manufacturing facilities.
- Interest in contributing to the launch and growth of a new facility and major capital projects.
- Ability to travel up to approximately 20%, typically no more than one week at a time, with flexibility based on project needs.
Work EnvironmentThis role is primarily based in a corporate office with a business casual dress code, working Monday through Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Plant Engineer regularly supports multiple manufacturing facilities that operate in a heavy industrial environment, where appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when on site. The position offers the opportunity to work with new equipment and major capital projects, including involvement in building and supporting a new facility from the ground up. The organization has a long-standing presence in the industry and a highly tenured internal team, reflecting a stable and experienced work culture. Travel to manufacturing sites is required up to about 20% of the time, typically for short trips of no more than one week, with flexibility based on project and personal scheduling needs.
