Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing of samples, and supporting efficient workflow in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. This role combines hands-on clinical skills with strong attention to detail, regulatory compliance, and excellent customer service while assisting with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Label all specimens accurately and completely, matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying information for 100% correctness.
  • Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and follow established procedures to maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records.
  • Package specimens properly for transport, following specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes in line with protocol.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests are performed and specimens are handled appropriately.
  • Comply with all OSHA and DEP regulations and follow safety guidelines at all times.
  • Attend annual departmental trainings and remain current with required procedures and regulatory updates.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries as appropriate.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques when needed.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • 2–4 years of overall work experience, preferably in a clinical, laboratory, or healthcare environment.
  • Proven experience performing blood draws and venipuncture with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to protocol.
  • Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
  • Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and staff.

This is a Contract position based out of Olney, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
