Job Description

This Phlebotomist II position provides direct patient-facing support in a fast-paced laboratory setting, performing blood draws and specimen collection while delivering excellent customer service. You will collect, process, and prepare specimens for testing and transport, ensure accurate documentation and labeling, and maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities

  • Greet patients as they arrive at the lab and provide a professional, compassionate, and efficient experience.
  • Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections (including blood, urine, and fecal specimens) using straight needles and butterfly needles, following established procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other collection procedures to patients to ease anxiety and ensure understanding.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established protocols, including handling difficult draws such as scar tissue, rolling veins, pediatric, and geriatric patients.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and protocol.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in appropriate containers or tubes and storing them at the required temperature to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Follow all procedures outlined for specimen handling, storage, and transport to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination activities in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and perform data entry related to specimen collection and processing.
  • Answer telephone calls, read laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Prepare collection sites, including proper cleaning and setup of equipment and supplies.
  • Handle insurance and billing-related steps associated with specimen collection and processing as required by the site.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend required annual department trainings.
  • Provide excellent customer service by maintaining a patient-first mindset and demonstrating professionalism at all times.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, participate in a peer-auditing culture, and support a strong team environment.
  • Manage workload independently, prioritize tasks, and remain productive under pressure and in high-volume conditions.
  • Adapt to changing schedules, different sites, and staffing needs, including working with trainers and supporting coverage during shortages.
  • Maintain a strong attendance record, demonstrate reliability, and consistently uphold professional standards throughout the contract.

Essential Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 6+ months of phlebotomy experience, including proficiency with straight and butterfly needles.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle difficult blood draws, including patients with scar tissue, rolling veins, and pediatric and geriatric populations.
  • Proven success performing approximately 20–50 or more blood draws per shift in high-pressure environments.
  • Strong phlebotomy skills, including venipuncture, blood collection, and specimen processing.
  • Accurate specimen handling and labeling, with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to navigate electronic medical record (EMR) systems and troubleshoot basic technology issues.
  • Experience quickly learning and troubleshooting devices and systems such as scanners, tablets, computers, EMRs, and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Customer service skills with a patient-first mindset, demonstrating compassion, professionalism, and clear communication.
  • Ability to explain procedures clearly and ease patient anxiety during specimen collection.
  • Adaptability and teamwork skills, including working effectively in diverse teams and supporting a peer-auditing culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workload independently and stay productive under pressure.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to take initiative.
  • Proven reliability with a strong attendance record.
  • Flexibility to move between sites, adjust to trainer schedules, and assist during staffing shortages.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • National Phlebotomy Certification (such as NHA, ASCP, or equivalent) preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
  • Experience with centrifuges and centrifuging specimens.
  • Comfort working with a wide range of patient populations, including geriatric patients.
  • Strong data entry skills and accuracy in maintaining patient information.
  • Openness to feedback and eagerness to learn and grow within the role.
  • Interest in long-term growth opportunities within a large, global laboratory organization, including potential movement into lab, sales, or client services roles.
  • Ability to uphold and contribute to a strong team culture and collaborative work environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting in Clackamas, Oregon, within a patient-facing outpatient environment. You will work at a laboratory draw site that handles a high volume of patients and specimens, requiring focus, organization, and strong interpersonal skills. The schedule is on a shift basis (specific shift to be determined), and the position is offered as a 3‑month contract with a strong likelihood of extension based on business needs and performance; some contracts typically extend to 6–9 months, and there may be an opportunity to transition to a direct role, though this is not guaranteed. You will use a variety of technologies and equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, scanners, tablets, computers, EMR systems, and laboratory information systems. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $23.11/hr.
