The Peer Counselor assists helping WIC clients to successfully breastfeed their babies. Work involves providing instruction in proper breastfeeding techniques and supplying any needed equipment. Employee is responsible for regular follow up to ensure mothers have the assistance they need.
Teaches classes on how to breastfeed and the advantages of breastfeeding.
Counsels breastfeeding clients either in person or over the phone regarding breastfeeding.
Provide support and follow-up to breastfeeding mothers.
Gather and assess information from WIC clients and determine their breastfeeding needs.
Responsible to follow up regularly with the client until the client no longer needs assistance.
Interact with client and document on assessment forms the needs and progress of the client.
Maintain inventory of breast feeding material and supplies.
May require availability to assist breastfeeding participants outside of normal business hours and locations.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Performs other related duties as required.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Must complete 20 hours of peer counselor training within the first 30 days of employment.
Must have participated as a WIC breastfeeding mom.
Cannot be a licensed or credentialed health professional such as International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Registered Dietician (RD), or nurse.
