Description:

Our inpatient pediatric unit can accommodate 8-10 pediatric patients who present with a variety of general medical conditions and those who are in need of post-surgical care.

We are one of a very few integrated neonatal intensive care units in the nation. Our NICU infants remain in the LDRP room with the family. This allows for true family centered care and bonding while both recover after delivery.

As a Level III NICU, we provide care to infants 28+ weeks gestation. We also have a NICU transport team that typically will help transport infants from smaller hospitals to our NICU when a higher level of care is needed.

POSITION PURPOSE

Manages theday-to-day operations and upholds clinical practice standards of the department.Provides positive leadership andproblem-solvingskills andis responsible forcontinuous quality improvement, patient satisfaction, budgeting, customer and staff feedback,trainingand development.Works cooperatively with other departments ofMercyOneNortheast Iowa, thecommunityand professional organizations to ensure quality services. Adheres toMercyOne’sperformance expectations and performs all defined services and other related dutiesin accordance withthe mission,visionand values ofMercyOne.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responsible forthe clinicalpractice within the department.

  • Assures safe, effective delivery of clinical services.

  • On a daily basis, demonstrates own presence or involvement indepartment.

  • Rounds and interacts with physicians, staff, patients,familiesand customers.

  • Available to problem solve,supportandassistthe team.

  • Upholds clinical practice standards and guidelines.

  • Explores opportunities to improve clinical outcomes andtakesaction.

  • Keepsself updatedand current withnew trendsand technology related to clinical specialty, areas of responsibility,leadershipand management.

  • Monitors staffingpatternthat supports effective clinical services within established budget parameters.

  • Assuresoperations are responsive to changes in coding,billingand reimbursement.

  • Collects, analyzes,interpretsand applies age-specific data.

  • Performs tasks/procedures, uses equipment in anage appropriatemanner.

  • Communicates and works with others in anage appropriatemanner.

CQI.

  • Develops,implementsandmonitorsa Quality Improvement Plan that is reviewed and revised annually or as needed for CQI.

  • Responds to customer complaints within 24-48 hours.

  • Follows up on incident reports and takes immediate action to events of major consequences.

  • Documents andtakes actionwithin 24 hours on potentially compensable events (i.e., accidents, professional errors, etc.).

  • Documents andreportsunsafe conditions.

  • Demonstrates compliance with all licensing, accrediting, certification, and/or legal requirements.

Communication/ leadership.

  • Assures actions and decisions are consistent with the Mission,Visionand Values.

  • Works cooperatively with physicians, volunteers,employeesand otherNEIApersonnel.

  • Adapts current operations to the changing needs of customers, families, physicians,employeesand the community.

  • Keeps director/V.P. informed of programs,problemsand issues.

  • Resolves problems independently asappropriate.

  • Communicates tostaffall relevant information; holds periodic communication meetings and ensures records are kept.

  • Adheres to existing policies and procedures;assistsin developing policies and procedures that are consistent with regulating agency guidelines andMercyOnemission and philosophy.

  • Promotes and adheres to the elements of the Corporate Compliance Program.

  • Manages change by educating team members to accept and acknowledge change, leading others through it with enthusiasm.

  • Actively listens and often helps others to deal with stress and stressful situations.

Team Development.

  • Selects competent staff at a level consistent with need,in a timely manner.

  • Ensures new employees are oriented to department and job and that initial competency assessment is complete and documented.

  • Deliversobjective and honest feedback, giving credit when deserved.

  • Completes annual competency assessments on or before due date.

  • Administers anddocumentsdisciplinary action asappropriate.

  • Encourages staff development (i.e., assesses needs,assistsin development of education plan).

  • Maintains an acceptable turnover rate.

Budgeting.

  • Prepares/contributes to an annual budget that is congruent with goals andobjectives.

  • Maintains acceptable level of expenditures consistent with budgeted amounts.

  • Adjustsutilizationof staff and materials to actual workload.

  • Makes decisions about and effectively coordinates the use of all resources (people, materials, time) to achieve maximum productivity.

Adheres to all safety, infection control andcolleaguehealth policies and procedures.

  • Attends required safety programs.

  • Appropriately and consistentlyusesthe personal protective equipment requiredofthe job.

  • Knows and candemonstratedepartmental emergency procedures for fire,disasterand other emergency situations.

  • Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.

  • Asks forassistancewhen needed toassuresafety for all involved.

  • Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate Degreerequired, Bachelors Degree preferred.

BSN and college courses in management preferred.

Minimum of 3 years surgical, PACU, or ambulatory surgery nursing experience.

Current Iowa RN license.

BLS.

ACLS.

Mandatory Reporter.

High language, high math, high reasoning ability.

Personal computer.
