The PCB Chemist is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining chemical processes used in the manufacturing of printed circuit boards (PCBs). This role focuses on surface finishing, etching, plating, and cleaning chemistries to ensure high product quality, process efficiency, and compliance with environmental and safety standards.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize chemical formulations used in PCB manufacturing, including etchants, plating baths, and surface treatments
  • Monitor and control chemical processes such as electroplating, electroless plating, and chemical etching
  • Conduct routine analysis of process baths and recommend adjustments to maintain performance
  • Troubleshoot chemical-related defects (e.g., poor adhesion, contamination, uneven plating)
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve yields and reduce defects
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations (e.g., waste treatment, chemical handling)
  • Maintain accurate documentation of formulations, test results, and process changes
  • Support new product development and qualification of materials
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate and implement new chemical technologies
  • Train production staff on proper chemical handling and process procedures

Skills and Experience:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

Experience:

  • Or 2–5+ years of experience in PCB manufacturing, electrochemistry, or industrial chemical processes preferred
  • Experience with plating technologies (copper, nickel, gold, etc.) is highly desirable


Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of wet chemistry and analytical techniques
  • Knowledge of electrochemical processes and surface chemistry
  • Familiarity with PCB fabrication processes (etching, drilling, plating, lamination)
  • Ability to analyze data and solve complex process problems
  • Experience with laboratory instruments (e.g., titration, spectroscopy, pH meters)
  • Strong documentation and technical reporting skills
  • Knowledge of environmental and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA)


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC)
  • Familiarity with ISO quality systems (e.g., ISO 9001)
  • Background in failure analysis and root cause investigation
  • Experience with automation and process control systems
