Position Summary:
The Pavement Striping Operator is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of pavement markings on city streets. This role involves operating specialized striping equipment, implementing traffic control measures, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards and regulations. The operator plays a key role in maintaining safe and efficient roadway systems.
Essential Duties:
- Perform duties involving traffic control and traffic control maintenance activities.
- Plan and execute pavement marking projects, including preparing equipment, gathering materials, coordinating crew activities, and implementing appropriate traffic control measures.
- Install and maintain pavement markings on city streets utilizing paint, thermoplastic, and other related materials.
- Operate and maintain a variety of pavement marking equipment, including thermoplastic applicators, thermoplastic pre-melter systems, and long-line striping trucks.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of safe practices when working with preheated thermoplastic materials.
- Use an asset management program to track work orders and manage the inventory of pavement markings within the City of Prescott.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to pavement markings, including maintaining knowledge of current traffic codes and guidelines.
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on striping equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Assist with roadway safety efforts by ensuring markings are visible, accurate, and properly applied.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma required. Three (3) years of full-time hands-on experience in pavement markings, paint striping, traffic line painting, or related field work. Ability to identify information shown on traffic plan drawings to include, lane lines, edge lines, stop bars, crosswalks, lane use symbols, bike lane markings, etc. Three (3) years experience in setup and breakdown of temporary traffic control; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
Licensing, Certification, and Other Requirements:
Possess a valid Class A Arizona commercial driver's license (CDL) in good standing or obtain one within six (6) months of hire date; have a clean driving record; speak, read, and write English; and desire certifications for Signs and Markings Level I, Basic Traffic Control, and Flagger.

- Knowledge of procedures, tools, and equipment used in transportation system maintenance.
- Knowledge of components related to traffic control including installation, repair, and maintenance of striping and devices.
- Knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of construction blueprints and maps.
- Skill in operating and working around moving equipment.
- Skill in utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
- Ability to follow safety practices and recognize hazards.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in the field.
- Requires working nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when needed.
- Safely operates required equipment and vehicles necessary in performance of required duties.
- Safely lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries 75 pounds without assistance.
- Clearly sees, with correction if necessary, during day hours, evening hours, and under potentially adverse weather conditions in order to effectively and safely: operate required vehicles; read street/road signs, maps, and handwritten/typewritten materials; and perform required duties.
- Clearly, concisely, and effectively communicates in person, over the telephone, and over the radio
- Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to self or others.
