Position: Patient Record Abstractor/Coding Educator

Location: San Francisco CA 94104

Duration: 6 Months + Possible Extension

  • Patient Record Abstractors analyze, abstract, and compile medical information from patients’ records as a service to physicians, researchers, and various agencies and business offices associated with patient care; and perform other related duties as required.
  • Coding Educator is responsible for providing education and training for physicians, staff and other providers on professional fee coding and clinical documentation standards.
  • The Educator will conduct coding quality reviews, analyze findings, and provide follow up education to coding staff and providers.
  • Educator will outline and annotate applicable laws and coding compliance mandates applicable to the coding being reviewed and provide written and verbal teaching, training or policies to affected parties.
  • Coder Educator must be facile and knowledgeable of all applicable billing and coding regulations and be able to effectively communicate these regulations to all levels of faculty, management and staff.
  • Coder Educator is responsible for new CPT and ICD-10 updates.
  • Incumbent is expected to research these yearly changes, work with Revenue Integrity to update the CDM as well as determine which changes will impact the FPRMO, reimbursement, and roll out training for all impacted staff and faculty.
  • Complete pre and post payment audit reviews as needed to identify changes that will impact reimbursement to FPRMO supported departments. Draft impact documents to outline the changes to expected reimbursement due to coding changes implemented by the federal carriers, local and national insurance carriers, intermediary agencies, etc.



Required Qualifications:



  • Must be a Certified Professional Coder in good standing with AAPC or AHIMA, and must maintain yearly credits to ensure certification
  • 7 years of demonstrated coding experience; with training experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be able to pass all classes related to the Medical Center’s computer systems as well as related coding and billing applications.
  • May include off-site billing systems from partner hospitals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, CPT, ICD-10 coding conventions, and clinical documentation requirements
  • Prior experience in healthcare related setting
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Commercial carrier’s coding and billing standards
  • Strong analytical and communication skills



Required Licenses and/or Certifications:



Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or licensure equivalent to be evaluated by FPRMO management



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Prior working knowledge of the EPIC (Apex) system
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Secondary certification in professional coding subspecialty or Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) certification
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience in health care or physician practice operations
