Purpose

The Patient Care Technician – Specialist plays a key role in delivering safe, high‑quality, patient‑centered care. This position supports nurses and clinical teams by performing essential clinical and personal care tasks, ensuring a clean and safe environment, and contributing to efficient unit operations. In alignment with 3M’s commitment to advancing healthcare through precision, reliability, and innovation, the PCT–Specialist demonstrates strong technical competency, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to patient safety.

In addition to core responsibilities, the Specialist maintains competency in at least one advanced clinical skill based on departmental needs, such as basic arrhythmia recognition, complex wound care, 12‑lead EKGs, or NG tube clamping and removal.

• Provide high‑quality, culturally sensitive care while supporting a safe and respectful environment for patients and staff.

• Perform core PCT duties including:

  • Activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, repositioning)

  • Vital signs, weights, intake/output

  • Point‑of‑care testing (including blood glucose)

  • Telemetry monitor application/reapplication

  • Specimen collection

  • Simple dressings

  • Restraint application/removal per protocol

  • Bladder scanning

  • HAC and PSI prevention (e.g., SCDs, TED hose)

• Perform specialized skills such as:

  • IV catheter insertion and removal

  • Foley catheter insertion, removal, and straight catheterization

  • Phlebotomy

  • “Ticket to Ride” patient transport procedures

• Maintain competency in at least one advanced skill area:

  • Basic arrhythmia

  • Complex wound care

  • 12‑lead EKG

  • NG tube clamping and removal

• Report equipment malfunctions promptly to ensure reliability and safety—aligned with 3M’s standards for operational precision.

• Support unit workflow by responding to call lights, phones, transporting patients, and assisting with meal trays.

• Transport cardiac‑monitored patients safely within the hospital.

• Complete clerical tasks as needed to support unit efficiency.

• Document all care accurately and in accordance with established procedures.

• Work closely with nurses and healthcare providers to support patient care plans.

• Provide patient and family instruction under RN direction.

• Communicate learning needs, seek guidance when needed, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

• Demonstrate accountability, adaptability, and a solutions‑focused mindset consistent with 3M’s culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

• May enter rooms where medications are stored or transport medications only when accompanying a patient, and only between departments as permitted by policy.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Support

• Provide high‑quality, culturally sensitive care while supporting a safe and respectful environment for patients and staff.

Advanced Clinical Competencies

• May enter rooms where medications are stored or transport medications only when accompanying a patient, and only between departments as permitted by policy.

Qualifications

• This position can be downgraded to a PCT Sr or PCT based on experience

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Must meet one of the following experience pathways:

  • a) Two years of general healthcare experience and eligibility for the Patient Care Technician – Senior title, OR

  • b) One year of qualifying experience and current enrollment in a PT, OT, or PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR

  • c) One year of qualifying experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

• Successful completion of the Patient Care Technician Specialist training class.

• Successful completion of eRecord training.

• Annual completion of a professional contribution, to be determined after hire.

• Nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation are preferred.

• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic experience—or current enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program—is preferred.

• May require successful completion of the appropriate cardiac rhythm course based on organizational and unit guidelines.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

• CPR certification required within 30 days of hire (AHA standards including didactic and skills demonstration).

• ACLS certification preferred.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.

• Act 34 clearance required.
