The Part-Time Sacristan will have multiple years of experience as an altar server or sacristan in a parish, shrine, cathedral, or a major pilgrimage destination and will possess a sound foundational knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical practice. This experience should include working in a parochial or similar sacristy and regular service at Masses for one celebrant, with concelebrants, with bishops, and on feast days with many attendees. This is a part-time position anticipated 29 / week plus occasional increased hours to fill in for busy days or when other sacristans are unavailable.
Core ResponsibilitiesServes and lectors at daily Mass on a set weekly schedule with other staff of the Department of Liturgy and at Masses for the Shrine Chaplain, visiting priests, and pilgrimage groups at various times of the day, potentially in the early morning or early evening
Prepares the vestments, texts, and items for Mass, eucharistic Adoration, vespers, and other liturgical services
Prepares the sacristy, altar, and other liturgical spaces for Mass, Adoration, and special liturgies
Assists in maintaining an orderly and clean sacristy under the supervision of the Senior Liturgy Coordinator.
Maintains email communications and other interdepartmental communications daily, following the communication protocol set by the Senior Liturgy Coordinator.
Bilingual English – Spanish strongly preferred.
Liturgically sound grounding in Roman Catholic liturgical practice
At least two years of experience as an altar server for a parish, cathedral, or other Catholic place of worship.
Ability to lift 50 pounds to move tables, chairs, and kneelers for weekly liturgies
