Part-Time Ninth Grade English/Humanities Teacher -School Year 2026-2027

The Foote School seeks a talented, energetic individual to join its faculty as a Ninth Grade Humanities teacher with a concentration in writing and language arts, starting in late August 2026. The position is likely part-time with the possibility of becoming full-time in the near future.

The Foote School is an independent K-9 all-gender day school in New Haven, Connecticut. We believe children learn best when meaningful challenges are balanced with time to be children, so our days combine experiential learning, thoughtful inquiry, and space to grow.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in the teaching of writing, literature analysis, English instruction, and experience working with middle and early high school-aged students. They should demonstrate not only a passion for the subject but also an understanding of adolescents' developmental needs, along with flexibility, creativity, and a genuine interest in young people.

Essential Duties and Requirements:

  • Plan and present lessons
  • Prepare and administer regular and varied assessments of student learning, and provide constructive feedback
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques to engage adolescent learners
  • Complete narrative trimester reports of students' learning and recommendations as needed
  • Communicate effectively in support of each student with their parents, advisor, and other teachers
  • Performance of other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the School

Professional Skills and Personal Qualifications:

  • Joyful, trustworthy, kind, and approachable, with a strong sense of humor and integrity
  • Commitment to best practices as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, History, or a related field; master’s degree preferred
  • 3–5 years of middle or early high school teaching experience, including advanced classes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate literature, including young adult fiction
  • Passion for learning, teaching, and curriculum development for early adolescents
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and assessment to meet diverse student needs
  • Experience teaching writing across genres and using varied, student-centered assessments
  • Appreciation for independent school education and the middle/early high school years
  • Commitment to professional growth, collaboration, and innovation
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues, students, and families
  • Flexibility, sound judgment, and professionalism, including maintaining confidentiality
