TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include working days, evenings and/or weekends as well as possible off-site travel.

Requires the provision of official transcriptsand/or certifications within (30) days of hire.

The six-week (part-time) summer, Upward Bound Activity Assistant is responsible for assisting with the supervision of project participants, for a federally funded grant TRIO Program to assist low-income, first-generation 9th-12th graders to graduate from high school and enter post-secondary education. The Activity Assistant reports to the Director, Upward Bound, provides direct services to students, and and is limited to no more than 19 hours per week.

The Activity Assistant facilitates elective-based activities and services that improve high school retention and graduation rates and promote the completion of a rigorous secondary school program of study. The Activity Assistant will communicate with project staff in order to meet any and all specific deadlines or program requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Helps orient students to campus resources (such as Learning Lab, Counseling, Career Center, Advising and other key resources)
  • Helps assess participant academic progress through weekly activities
  • Helps students make mindful decisions and solving problems
  • Helps students identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success
  • Helps students focus on individual goals and identify steps to reach those goals
  • Motivates students to take ownership of their own academic success
  • Other related duties may be assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee typically works in an office/classroom environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office/classroom equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office/classroom. The employee may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to twenty (20) pounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Minimum of a college sophomore with at least 30 postsecondary level credits with a minimum 3.0 GPA
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least one (1) year of work experience
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Project Participants
  • Bilingual – English/Spanish

  • Proven interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact with others
  • Ability to engage participants and build healthy professional relationships

  • Strong overall organizational skills, detail-oriented, with an ability to plan and manage multiple projects concurrently
