Performs difficult semiskilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of public park facilities, buildings, grounds, utilities and associated facilities; related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned Supervisor. Full supervision is exercised over subordinate Maintenance Workers.
Performing a variety of semiskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of public park facilities, grounds, utilities and related facilities.

Performs a variety of semiskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing sidewalks and driveways; assists with concrete work; digs trenches and ditches, cleans catch basins, and drainage lines.
Builds and sets forms and finishes concrete; patches new and old concrete work.
Transports crews, materials and equipment to and from job sites; oversees crews engaged in building and grounds maintenance; trains subordinate workers in correct methods of performing assigned work.
Constructs, maintains and repairs manholes, catch basins, curbing’s and retaining walls; installs and repairs fencing; replaces roofs; builds new picnic shelters.
Performs a variety of general grounds keeping and landscaping duties.
Places sod and reseeds grassy areas; assists visitors in locating graves as needed.
Mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats, trims trees and shrubs; performs related landscaping duties in the maintenance of park and golf course grounds; pine straw, rock and mulch in landscape beds.
Prepares athletic fields for baseball, softball, football, soccer; marks lines on playing fields; reshapes mounds; resets bases; cleans out dugouts; puts up goals; performs general field maintenance duties.
Cleans park facilities; sanitizes bathrooms; performs minor plumbing maintenance; mops, strips and waxes floors; dusts furniture, doors and windows; empties trash cans.
Maintains playground equipment, tennis courts, and enclosures; places mulch around playground equipment; installs new playground equipment.
Sets up community centers for various events; sets up tents, tables and chairs; cleans up and restores area after events.
Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on various pieces of equipment; prepares and submits vehicle maintenance and maintenance expenditure reports.
Trains new employees and oversees the assigned part-time personnel; receives and assigns work assignments to assigned personnel.
Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
Operates chainsaw, concrete saw, jackhammer, asphalt roller, weed eater, stump grinder, etc. in the construction, maintenance and repair of public works and utilities facilities.
If qualified may operate dump trucks, back hoe, front end loader.
Performs related tasks as required.
Thorough knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures; general knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to read and write; ability to supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in public utilities and public works facilities maintenance, repair and construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 6 months experience preferred. Possession of Class C driver’s license valid in the state of North Carolina. May require possession of or ability to obtain specific certifications depending on area of assignment. Special Consideration for possession of a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions; work requires depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very quiet location (e.g. park trail, storage or file room).
