The successful candidate will perform journey-level facility and grounds maintenance work at City parks, buildings, recreational areas, and other assigned areas. Positions in this classification are structured around the needs of the division and maintenance program and the skill brought to the position by the employee. Employees in this classification are responsible for performing tasks in a wide variety of occupational areas including horticulture, grounds maintenance, equipment operation, small engine and diesel engine repair, equipment/facility repair involving knowledge of carpentry, electrical and plumbing trades.
Employees are expected to function effectively and cooperatively as a member of a crew or independently as assigned. Assignments are usually written, oral or based on a seasonal maintenance schedule. Employees are expected to complete all assignments without direct supervision.
Work requires the safe and efficient operation of hand, power and automotive equipment to avoid injuries to the employee, other employees, the public and damage to City equipment, facilities or structures. Duties require dealing with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner. Work is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions or inside depending on the assignment and the season of the year.

Designs and constructs areas for landscaping; plants and prunes trees, shrubs and flower beds; mixes and applies herbicides and pesticides; operates hand, power and automotive equipment to mow lawns exercising safety precautions to avoid obstacles and people; installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems, playground equipment, ball fields, fences, park benches, tables and buildings; overhauls, repairs and maintains small and diesel engines; installs concrete liners and sets up equipment for graveside services at City cemetery.
Repairs and maintains a variety of hand, power and automotive equipment, such as tractors, mowers, gators, trailers, blowers, edgers, trimmers and chainsaws. Performs basic carpentry tasks such as framing and other basic construction which requires cutting lumber to proper lengths, nailing, screwing, and gluing. Performs basic electrical tasks such as pulling wire, replacing outlets, replacing light ballasts, replacing light fixtures, and basic wiring such as switches. Performs basic plumbing work such as clearing drains, installing sinks, repairing irrigation systems, running pipe, and digging needed trenches. Performs related duties as assigned.Knowledge of:
• Building, horticulture, landscaping, and grounds maintenance, equipment operation and repair, carpentry, plumbing or electrical trades as required by the division's programs and position.
Ability to:
• Learn and master the activities included in the division maintenance program;

• Operate equipment safely and effectively;
• Learn new cost saving maintenance procedures;
• Demonstrate physical strength and agility to perform the work in a safe manner, normal vision, depth perception and hand/eye coordination;

• Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with supervisor, lead workers, other City personnel and the public.
Education and Experience
Two years of maintenance experience in two or more of the following areas: horticulture, landscaping, building and grounds maintenance, and equipment operation and repair. Vocational-technical course work or training in the above areas may be substituted for up to one year of the experience.
Special Qualifications:
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license.
• Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License within four (4) months of appointment.
• Ability to obtain aWSDA Pesticide License within four (4) months of appointment.This position requires the physical strength to exert force and/or lift or carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds frequently; occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds with the assistance of another worker; requires endurance to frequently move about from location to location, on foot and by various motor driven equipment; occasionally required to remain seated for extended periods, e.g., on a mower; frequently required to push and/or pull equipment; frequently reaches and uses hands and arms and/or feet and legs to move controls on machinery or equipment; requires repetitive hand motion associated with hand and power tools; and periodically required to kneel, crouch, bend, stoop or crawl. Frequently exposed to high noise levels. Work is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions or inside depending on the assignment and the season of the year.
SELECTION PROCESS
Those applicants whose qualifications most closely correspond to the City's current needs will be contacted for interviews and/or testing. The appointing authority may conduct second interviews.
Notification –Following submission of application, an email acknowledgment receipt of application is given. Persons selected for an interview and/or testing will be notified by email, normally within 15 working days following the closing date on the job announcement.
