Parks Maintenance Specialists - 2 Positions

The City of Tukwila is seeking two (2) Park Maintenance Specialists. These positions will work with the Lead Maintenance Specialist and fellow crew members to implement the maintenance management plans to meet the desired service levels of the Tukwila Parks, Trails, and Open Space system. The Parks Maintenance Specialistperforms skilled maintenance activities related to the ground maintenance of City parks and/or facilities; City landscape and operating equipment which does not require a commercial driver's license.

Salary Range:
$ 6,189 - $ 7,521per month. represented by the Teamsters Local Union #763
Note:We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.

  • Performs a variety of skilled activities in maintaining and repairing City grounds, facilities and equipment including such activities to include mowing, trimming, fertilizing, aerating, spraying, and repairing turf; developing and designing landscaping beds; diagnosing and treating landscape problems; performing grounds maintenance activities such as trimming, planting, pruning, and maintaining vegetation, shrub beds and trees; applying pesticides; and recycling to include chipping and mulching.
  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains structures, playgrounds, fences, tables, and fountains.
  • Assembles materials and equipment for service requests including loading trucks with supplies and materials.
  • Performs skilled work involving operation of vehicles which does not require a commercial driver's license, such as flail mowers, backhoes, tractors, and front-end loaders.Performs operational checks and simple maintenance activities; reports needed repairs.
  • Maintains and performs routine repair of irrigation systems, to include installing and repairing irrigation heads, valves, irrigation pipes, signal wires, timers, and pumps.
  • Maintains reasonable, predictable, and regular attendance during the standard work week.
  • May inventory supplies and make minor purchases as needed.
  • Maintains sports fields to include planning and scheduling maintenance; grading; maintaining field surfaces and structures; and lining, dragging, and preparing fields.

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

  • Maintenance and repair methods and techniques in area of assignment;
  • Basic grounds keeping and equipment maintenance techniques;
  • Safety precautions applicable to area of assignment;
  • Tools and equipment used in area of assignment; and
  • Systems maintained in area of assignment.


SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

  • Using equipment and tools properly and safely;
  • Applying customer service techniques;
  • Operating vehicles requiring less than a commercial driver's license;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public; and
  • Communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two years of related maintenance experience in area of assignment as described on this posting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License;
  • First Aid and CPR certification; AND
  • Washington State Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's License must be obtain in six (6) months from hire date.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Communication and customer service skills;
  • Ability to learn a varied skill set related to facility, landscaping, and park maintenance;
  • Possession of a valid State Driver's License, and a safe driving record; AND
  • Ability to attend work on a regular, predictable basis as scheduled.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY/REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, mobility, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Duties are performed primarily outdoors in a variety of terrains, under a variety of weather conditions, including sun, rain, wind, mud, and snow, for periods of approximately eight (8) hours/day. Duties are frequently performed working alone, but may sometimes be performed as part of a work team. Conditions at work sites might include falling objects, loose footings, loud noises, construction equipment, and working in right-of-way, traffic, or roadways.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
